Origin of Impairment
His impairment is the result of polio. He contracted the illness at age four.
Start of sporting career
At age 16 a friend suggested he try wheelchair basketball. After running away from the orphanage in which he lived to find a team in Ibirapuera Park, Sao Paulo, he also started to try other sports.
To be in the top three of the world para-triathlon rankings and compete in triathlon at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Most memorable sporting achievement
Winning bronze at the 2011 Para-Triathlon World Championships. He says he did not expect to finish so high, and the result showed him that he was able to compete successfully against athletes at the highest level.
Swiss para-skier and para-cyclist Heinz Frei, Japanese para-skier Kozo Kubo, Brazilian basketballer Oscar Schimit, US basketballer Michael Jordan, Italian cyclist Mario Cipollini, Brazilian marathon runner Vanderlei de Lima who was attacked by a spectator at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
Superstitions / Rituals
He sometimes writes the names of athletes he admires on his equipment before competing, in order to inspire and push himself further.
He was Brazil’s flag bearer at the closing ceremony of the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi.
COMPETING AT RIO 2016
He is aiming to represent Brazil in both handcycling and para-triathlon at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. However, he says he is more likely to only compete in para-triathlon at the event as that is his preferred sport out of the two.
In Sochi in 2014, along with his teammate Andre Perreira, he was part of the first delegation of athletes from Brazil to compete at a Paralympic Winter Games.
BENEFITS OF SKIING ON TRIATHLON
He believes the techniques and skills he has learnt from para-skiing transfer to his preferred sport of triathlon. “I like being outdoors in the cold weather. Skiing was an opportunity to improve my endurance, technique, and physical abilities for triathlon, especially for swimming which is where I was weakest. Going to the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games was also an opportunity to attract more support and funding for me for the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio.”
He has taken a variety of jobs in order to support his sporting career, particularly in the field of media production. He has primarily worked on translation and subtitles for Brazilian television shows.
