Lausanne to host ITU Triathlon Elite Sprint World Championship

The International Triathlon Union (ITU) is pleased to announce the addition of the inaugural ITU Elite Sprint Triathlon World Championship to its 2010 race calendar, to be held in Lausanne, Switzerland on August 21. There will be a $50,000 prize purse up for grabs at this first-of-a-kind event.
“The distances are short, exciting, and we think the spectators and viewers will enjoy watching our athletes race at such a high intensity.”ITU President Marisol Casado
“We are very excited to host the ITU Triathlon Elite Sprint World Championship in Lausanne, a city with a history of great sporting events,” said ITU President Marisol Casado. “The distances are short, exciting, and we think the spectators and viewers will enjoy watching our athletes race at such a high intensity. The shorter distances present a great opportunity for our younger athletes to compete in the sport in a sustainable way as well.”

Athletes competing in this first-ever event will complete a 750-metre swim, 20-km bike and 5-km run. Expect the men’s podium to finish in less than 55 minutes and the women’s podium break the tape in under an hour.

Lausanne hosted the 1998 and 2006 ITU Triathlon World Championship as well as the 2005 ETU Triathlon European Championship. The city has hosted an ITU Triathlon World Cup on five occasions, dating back to 1998.

The ITU Triathlon Team World Championship will also take place in Lausanne on August 22.

A sprint-distance triathlon will also be on the programme for the first-ever Youth Olympic Games in Singapore from August 14-26, 2010. Read more on what countries have qualified already here

Spain to Reform Anti-Doping Legislation

One of the fundamental pillars of anti-doping is that there is harmony within countries and sports in how rules are interpreted and applied. Therefore, it is important to note that it has been reported that Spain is to reform its anti-doping legislation to improve the cooperation between the courts and sports disciplinary bodies, Spanish sports minister Jaime Lissavetzky said.

In an article written by Mark Elkington and edited by Pritha Sarkar for Reuters, it was reported that “it has been a contentious issue that the evidence uncovered in Spain’s anti-doping probe in 2006, known as Operacion Puerto, has not been made available to sporting bodies to decide upon possible punishments for sportsmen and women.”

The investigating judge has ruled there was insufficient evidence to prosecute for the only relevant offence in Spain at that time, which was for endangering public health.

“When doping cases arrive in the courts, sometimes they remain in a legal limbo,” Lissavetzky was quoted as saying in sports daily Marca on Tuesday. “We will look for formulas that will allow greater flexibility in these cases. This reform will be in line with the world anti-doping code.”

The ITU understands the need for harmonized rules and it can only benefit all athletes to have consistent ways of dealing with anti-doping violations. If you have a question about ITU’s Anti-doping programme, please contact the ITU Anti-doping Director at

Seven countries from the Arab world gathered in Cairo, Egypt this week for the first Congress of the Arab Triathlon Confederation (ATC). Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Morocco, Oman, Syria and Tunisia were all represented.

Houmam Moualla of Syria was elected as the President of ATC, while Nasser Ersayed, also of Syria, was elected Secretary General. Mohamed Wanis of Egypt was elected the First Vice President, and Ms. Sawsan Ghul of Jordan was elected the Second Vice President.

The key strategic goals established were to support the development of national federations, as well as expanding national coaching and technical officials programmes.

Preparing a marketing programme to increase the position of triathlon amongst the Arab countries is a major priority. The Syrian Triathlon Federation was congratulated for the development work they have done, particularly ensuring that Omar Tayara became the first Arab triathlete to compete in the Olympic Games in Beijing (2008).

Cooperation amongst the Arab countries and ITU, as well as the respective continental confederations (ATU and ASTC) is also a priority.

ITU Sport Development Director, Libby Burrell, outlined the resources available and the way in which ITU can support the development of the sport in North Africa and the Middle East.

Acquiring good bicycles for athletes was identified as the major problem confronting athletes who want to break onto the international scene.

Liesbeth Stoltz, President of the African Triathlon Union (ATU) and Loreen Barnett, Secretary General of ITU were also in attendance, and both congratulated the ATC members for the good work they are doing to develop the sport in the region.

Lausanne, Switzerland will host the 2010 ITU Triathlon Team World Championship on August 22, 2010. This event will take place one day after the first-ever ITU Triathlon Elite Sprint World Championship, also taking place in Lausanne.
“We couldn’t ask for a better location to host these two exciting events. The first ITU Triathlon Team World Championship in Des Moines last year was a great success and we look forward to showcasing this fast-paced format in Lausanne this season.” ITU President Marisol Casado
“We couldn’t ask for a better location to host these two exciting events,” said ITU President Marisol Casado. “The first ITU Triathlon Team World Championship in Des Moines last year was a great success and we look forward to showcasing this fast-paced format in Lausanne this season.”

Each country will be allowed to enter two relays of four athletes (two men and two women). The teams will compete in the order of female-male-female-male. Each athlete will complete a 275-metre swim, 6-km bike and 1.5-km run. After each athlete finishes his or her swim-bike-run segment he or she will tag the next athlete in the relay to make the exchange.

The 2009 ITU Triathlon Team Triathlon World Championship was hosted by Hy-Vee in Des Moines, Iowa, alongside the prestigious Hy-Vee ITU Triathlon Elite Cup, with the Swiss Team taking home top honours, topping Australia by only eight seconds. Team Canada rounded out the podium.

A 4 x mixed relay triathlon will also be on the programme for the first-ever Youth Olympic Games in Singapore from August 14-26, 2010. Fore more information on the Youth Olympic Games visit www.singapore2010.sg
