In its fifth appearance on the World Triathlon Series circuit, Kitzbühel will debut what might be the one of most demanding and innovative triathlon courses ever set. While Hahnenkamm Mountain is famous for hosting what is considered the hardest downhill ski race in the world, triathletes will be challenged to climb its sister peak, the Kitzbühel Horn mountain. Possibly The Toughest Triathlon In The WorldMany cities lack the landscape for tough courses, but the Austrian Alps provide the opportune background to host a testing course that is largely uphill. The 2013 race will break from the traditional sprint or standard distance that athletes are used to seeing in ITU races. After completing a 750m swim, triathletes will cycle through the village and then begin an ascent of 867 meters over 11.5km of hairpin mountain roads before facing another 136-meter incline on the 2.5km run. Amateur athletes who enter the age-group race will have the opportunity to tackle the same 1km total climb and compare their times against the best elite athletes in the world. "ITU is committed to holding events in iconic cities where we can bring the sport of triathlon to as many people as possible," ITU President and IOC Member Marisol Casado said. "Together, with Upsolut and our event partners, we are also focusing our efforts on implementing contemporary and challenging courses wherever possible." Next year, portions of the age-group bike courses will intersect with the site of the world's first-ever triathlon on Fiesta Island. Age-group triathletes will ride past world-renowned Sea World before finishing up with a run along the Mission Beach boardwalk. Age-groupers have the option of competing in Olympic-distance, sprint-distance, Olympic-distance relay or aquabike events. Many of the athletes competing at the Kitzbühel leg of the Dextro Energy Triathlon – ITU World Championship Series are making the relatively short trip to Hamburg for the next round this weekend. World number one Emma Moffatt has been in domineering form so far this year and hasn’t lost a race since the start of May. With two wins to her name already in the series another victory in Hamburg would set her up nicely for the Grand Final on home turf in early September. Moffatt’s only loss was at the hands of training partner and Olympic gold medallist Emma Snowsill who looks unlikely to be making the trip to Europe as she recovers from a slight hip injury. With another couple of weeks of training in the tank, Portugal’s Vanessa Fernandes could feature strongly despite pulling out on the run in Kitzbühel. The Olympic Games runner-up took the bronze at the European championships just three weeks ago as she returns to form following early season injury. German interest lies in last year’s Hamburg World Cup winner Ricarda Lisk who has continued to improve with every race. She will line up alongside Christiane Pilz and Anja Dittmer whilst Kate Allen from Austria will be looking for another top performance following a seventh place on home turf two weeks ago. The Swiss are enjoying a great season and although European champion Nicola Spirig is saving herself for the London leg of the series, Magali Di Marco should be threatening the podium. Washington, DC bronze medallist Daniela Ryf returns to action having missed Kitzbühel and will join Swedish training partner and Madrid silver medallist Lisa Norden on the pontoon. The Canadian squad elected to stay in the Austrian Alps between races and a fantastic performance in Kitzbühel by Kathy Tremblay gave her a second fourth place finish of the year. Lauren Groves showed some excellent running form at the Hy-Vee Elite Cup and will be one to watch should the weather heat up. Sarah Haskins and Laura Bennett make up the front end of a strong US contingent which includes the awesome swim duo of Hayley Piersol and Sara McLarty. Sarah Haskins y Laura Bennett son las líderes del fuerte equipo estadounidense, en que también está la impresionante pareja de nadadoras formada por Hayley Piersol y Sara McLarty. La mayor parte de los atletas que participaron en Kitzbühel en las Series de los Campeonatos del Mundo de Triatlón ITU Dextro Energy realizarán un pequeño viaje para participar en la siguiente prueba de este fin de semana en Hamburgo. La número uno del mundo Emma Moffatt ha sido la clara dominadora en lo que va de año y no ha perdido ninguna carrera desde principios de Mayo. Con dos vitorias en las series ya en su haber otra victoria en Hamburgo le pondría las cosas muy bien para la Gran Final a principios de Septiembre en su propio país. La única derrota de Moffatt fue a manos de su compañera de entrenamiento y medallista de oro Olímpica Emma Snowsill, aunque parece poco probable que viaje a Europa ya que se está recuperando de una pequeña lesión de cadera. Con dos semanas más de entrenamiento en el depósito, la portuguesa Vanessa Fernándes puede que venga fuerte a pesar de retirarse en la carrera a pie en Kitzbühel. La subcampeona en los Juegos Olímpicos se hizo con el bronce en los Campeonatos de Europa hace tan sólo tres semanas en su regreso a la competición tras haber estado lesionada el inicio de la temporada. El interés alemán se centra en la ganadora de la Copa del Mundo de Hamburgo del año pasado que continúa mejorando con cada carrera. Estará en la salida junto con Christiane Pilz y Anja Dittmer mientras que la austriaca Kate Allen intentará tener otra buena actuación tras el séptimo puesto conseguido en su país hace dos semanas. Las suizas están disfrutando de una gran temporada y aunque la campeona europea Nicola Spirig se está reservando para la prueba de Londres, Magali Di Marco debe ser una candidata al pódium. La medallista de bronce en Washington, DC Daniela Ryf regresa a la competición tras no haber estado en Kitzbühel y estará en el pontón junto con su compañera de entrenamiento y medallista de plata en Madrid la sueca Lisa Norden. El equipo canadiense decidió permanecer en los Alpes Austriacos entre las carreras y una fantástica actuación en Kitzbühel de Kathy Tremblay le dio su segundo cuarto puesto del año. Lauren Groves ha demostrado una excelente forma en la carrera a pie en la Copa Élite de Hy-Vee y si la temperatura es calurosa habrá que tenerla en cuenta. {/exp:tagstripper:tagsToSave}
Alistair Brownlee continued his ding-dong battle with Javier Gomez for the Dextro Energy Triathlon – ITU World Championship crown as the pair did battle once again in Kitzbühel at the latest round of the series. Brownlee’s third successive win took his points total up to 2400, whilst Gomez sits just 32 points back on 2368. Impressively the Brit has accumulated his entire total from just three Dextro Energy Triathlon – ITU World Championship series races whilst Gomez includes the same three races plus 203 points for his sixth place at the Hy-Vee ITU Triathlon Elite Cup. Laurent Vidal’s{/exp:tag_this} third place finish in Kitzbühel jumps the Frenchman up four places into third, ahead of Maik Petzold from Germany who moves up into fourth. Australia’s Brad Kahlefeldt drops two places to fifth.Tongyeong Dextro Energy Triathlon – ITU World Championship winner, Bevan Docherty, sits down in seventeenth position having suffered a crash in the Austrian race. Moffatt’s 2640 points are made up of two Dextro Energy Triathlon – ITU World Championship wins and a second place finish; as well as her Hy-Vee ITU Triathlon Elite Cup victory, which was worth half points. Hewitt sits some 411 points behind Moffatt but 411 points ahead of Snowsill. Jessica Harrison from France retains her fourth place position but faces strong competition from Britain’s 2008 world champion, Helen Jenkins, whose fifth place in Kitzbühel moves her to within just 12 points. Kathy Tremblay from Canada was the other big mover following the weekend, climbing five places to sixth. With three fixtures remaining before the Grand Final on Australia’s Gold Coast, the Dextro Energy Triathlon – ITU World Championship is still all to play for as the athletes travel to Hamburg, Germany for the weekend 25/26 July. De manera impresionante el británico ha sumado la totalidad de sus puntos en tan sólo tres carreras de las series de los Campeonatos del Mundo de Triatlón ITU Dextro Energy, mientras que Gómez tiene tres carreras de los Campeonatos del Mundo más 203 puntos de su sexto puesto en la Copa Elite de Triatlón ITU de Hy-Vee. Laurent Vidal con su tercer puesto en Kitzbühel salta de la cuarta a la tercera plaza, por delante del alemán Maik Petzold que se coloca en cuarta. El australiano Brad Kahlefeldt desciende dos puestos ocupando la quinta plaza. Bevan Docherty, ganador de la carrera del Campeonato del Mundo de Triatlón ITU Dextro Energy de Tongyeong, se sitúa en decimoséptima posición tras el accidente que sufrió en la carrera austriaca. Los 2640 puntos de Moffatt provienen de dos victorias en el Campeonato del Mundo de Triatlón ITU Dextro Energy y un segundo puesto y de su victoria en la Copa Elite de Triatlón ITU de Hy-Vee. Hewitt se sitúa a 411 puntos de Moffatt pero 411 puntos por delante se Snowsill. Emma Moffatt from Australia stopped the clock in 1:54:37 at the Kitzbhel Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series race to register her third straight victory following wins at the Washington, DC leg of the series and the Hy-Vee ITU Triathlon Elite Cup in Des Moines, Iowa, where she pocketed $200,000. Moffatts win reinforces her lead at the top of the Dextro Energy Triathlon - ITU World Championship Rankings. View the gallery here. View the full results here. The Beijing Olympic bronze medallist never looked troubled as she broke away at the half way point on the run to win by 34 seconds ahead of newly crowned European champion, Nicola Spirig from Switzerland. New Zealands Andrea Hewitt took third to back up her win at the Madrid Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship in May. The race started with a bang as Hayley Piersol from the USA laid down an awesome 1500m swim to exit the lake over a minute ahead of the next athlete. Her brother, Aaron, is a five time Olympic gold medallist in the pool and recently set two world records at the United States national championships. Her lead was short lived as she was tracked down on the 40km bike by the main pack driven by the British trio of Hollie Avil, Helen Jenkins and Kerry Lang. Spirig endured a poor swim and found herself time trialling up the leaders, managing to bridge the gap on lap three of eight. 2004 Olympic champion and local hero, Kate Allen, worked hard to pull herself back into the race and recovered from a ninety second deficit after the swim to work her way up to the thirty athlete strong lead group come second transition. Moffatt stole an early advantage as she put together a quick change onto the 10km run and took Spirig and 2008 world champion Jenkins with her. The Swiss athlete was the first to feel the burn and slipped back to the chasing pair of Hewitt and Canadas Kathy Tremblay whilst Allen drew on the home support to work her way through the runners. At the 5k point Moffatt surged hard to drop Jenkins who then fell back into the clutches of the three strong group behind as the Aussie drew away for the win. Spirig was the first to kick for the line from the chasers and crossed the line five seconds ahead of Hewitt with Tremblay in fourth. Jenkins took fifth as she managed to hold off the fast finishing European under 23 champion Yuliya Sapunova from the Ukraine. Rapturous applause greeted Allen, who was one place back in seventh, as she completed her final race on home soil before she retires at the end of the year. I had another good race and Im really happy with my performance, said an emotional Moffatt, who dedicated her victory to her grandmother who recently died back in Australia. Im enjoying a great year and I hope it will continue through to the Grand Final on the Gold Coast back in Australia in September. La medallista de bronce Olmpica nunca pareci preocupada y se escap en la mitad del punto medio de la carrera a pie para hacerse con la victoria con una ventaja de 34 segundos sobre la recin coronada campeona de Europa, la suiza Nicola Spirig. La neozelandesa Andrea Hewitt demostrando que su victoria en el Campeonatos del Mundo de Triatln ITU Dextro Energy de Madrid no fue una casualidad. La carrera comenz con un ritmo trepidante de la estadounidense Hayley Piersol en los 1500m de natacin donde consigui salir del lago con ms de un minuto de ventaja sobre la primera perseguidora. Su hermano Aaron, es cinco veces medallista de oro Olmpico en natacin y recientemente logr dos records mundiales en los campeonatos de Estados Unidos. Su ventaja dur poco ya que fue atrapada en los 40km de la bicicleta por el grupo principal, liderado por el tro britnico formado por Hollie Avil, Helen Jenkins y Kerry Lang. Spirig hizo una mala natacin y tuvo que afrontar en solitario como si fuera una contrarreloj la caza a los lderes, logrndolo en la tercera vuelta de las ocho. La campeona Olmpica en 2004 y hroe local Kate Allen trabaj duro para meterse de nuevo en la carrera y recuperar los noventa segundos de desventaja tras la natacin y de esta manera poder volver a entrar en el grupo fuerte de cabeza formado por treinta atletas en la segunda transicin. Moffatt se hizo rpidamente con una pequea ventaja ya que hizo un rpido cambio de ritmo en los 10km de carrera a pie y se llev con ella a la Spirig y a la Jenkins, la campeona del mundo en 2008. La atleta suiza fue la primera en sentir el cansancio en sus piernas y se descolg hasta la pareja perseguidora formada por Hewitt y la canadiense Kathy Tremblay, mientras que Allen se aprovech del apoyo local para ir superando a una corredora tras otra. En el kilmetro 5 Moffatt atac dejando atrs a Jenkins, quien se vio relegada a las garras del fuerte grupo perseguidor que vena por detrs, dejando a la australiana hacerse con la victoria. Spirig fue la primera en cruzar la lnea de meta del grupo perseguidor con una ventaja de cinco segundos sobre Hewitt que termin tercera. En cuarta posicin lleg Tremblay y en quinta Jenkins que logr resistir el rpido final de la campeona europea Sub23, la ucraniana Yuliya Sapunova. Los aplausos ms calurosos se los llev Allen, quien lleg en sptima posicin, en su ltima carrera en su propia localidad antes de su retirada al finalizar el ao. Hice una Buena carrera y estoy realmente contenta con mi actuacin, dijo una emocionada Moffatt, quien dedic su victoria a su abuela fallecida recientemente en Australia. Great Britains Alistair Brownlee made it three out of three with victory at the Kitzbhel Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series in Austria. The 21 year old remains unbeaten in the series following wins in Madrid and Washington, DC. Crossing the line in 1:43:13 he held off Spains European champion, Javier Gomez, and Frenchman Laurent Vidal under threatening alpine skies. Brownlees victory also took the Brit to the top of the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Rankings once again following four of the eight series legs. His 2400 points total overhauls Gomezs 2368 with Vidal moving into third on 1963. Brownlee exited the 1500m swim with the leaders but nearly scuppered his chances early on as he lost a shoe whilst mounting his bike on the exit of transition. Fortunately he was able to get it back on and rejoin the lead pack. "I cant believe I won. I felt absolutely awful in the swim and out on the bike but once I got on the run I felt great."Alistair BrownleeWith the rain starting to fall the slippery conditions claimed Alexander Brukhankov from Russia and Beijing Olympic Games bronze medallist Bevan Docherty who both came down on one of the tricky descents. Canadas Paul Tichelaar and Bruno Pais from Portugal tried to make the most of the apprehension within the pack by breaking away, however their 20 second lead by second transition was not enough to hold off the chasers. As in Madrid and Washington, DC, Brownlee made his move early on the run as he accelerated away from Gomez, Vidal and the German pair of Daniel Unger and Maik Petzold. Alistairs 19 year old younger brother, Jonathan, the recently crowned European junior champion, also remained in the thick of the action before dropping back late on. After 5km the older Brownlee held a 100 metre lead, however a surging Gomez started to track him down ensuring an exciting finish. However the Brit remained relaxed and was able to hold off the Spaniard to claim his third win as he enjoyed the applause of the Austrian crowd in the finishing straight. Just behind Gomez, Vidal kicked off the final turn to pull away from Petzold to prevent a repeat podium from the Washington, DC Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship race. Petzold finished fourth with compatriot Unger, who made a last minute decision to compete as his wife was due to give birth earlier this week, in fifth. I cant believe I won, said Brownlee. I felt absolutely awful in the swim and out on the bike but once I got on the run I felt great. It was a bit like training back in Yorkshire with the rain and cold conditions, and maybe that helped me. Im not really thinking too much about leading the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series right now, Im just looking forward to the next race and having the opportunity to compete in London in a months time. Tomorrow sees the womens race which starts at 4pm local time. The next round of the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series is in Hamburg, Germany, in two weeks. {/exp:tagstripper:tagsToSave}
