At the recent BBC Sports Personality show, dubbed the SPOTY's, Alistair Brownlee joined 11 fellow Team GB Olympians and Paralympians on stage to receive the Team of the Year award. Together, the group accepted the award from sporting legend Sir Roger Bannister, who is famous for becoming the first athlete to break the four-minute barrier in the mile. Great Britain’s Olympic and Paralympic Teams were given the award after their phenomenal performances on home soil in London this summer. Both teams finished third in the overall rankings. Only the United States and China beat out Team GB in the Olympic medal charts, while only China and Russia ranked ahead of Great Britain’s Paralympians. Great Britain tallied 65 medals, 29 of them gold at the Olympics, while Paralympians racked up 34 wins and a total of 120 medals. Great Britain’s Olympic triathletes Alistair, Jonathan Brownlee, Stuart Hayes, Helen Jenkins, Lucy Hall and Vicky Holland played a big part in their National Olympic Committee’s success. The Brownlees were responsible for Great Britain’s first ever triathlon medals and Jenkins posted the highest ever Olympich finish for a British female. Within the sport, Ian has been a Great Britain Age-Group Team Manager and a triathlon club coach supporting local triathletes in the South East achieve their personal triathlon challenges. Ian has held a number of positions on committees including the British Triathlon Association Performance Committee and Elite Selection Committee. Ian commented upon his appointment by the Board of British Triathlon: "I feel excited and honoured to be appointed as President and Chair of the British Triathlon Federation. I would like to pay tribute immediately to my predecessor Sarah Springman, without whom much of what we have achieved as a governing body would not have been possible. “Moving forward after a successful Olympic Games in which triathlon has captured the enthusiasm of the country; we need to consolidate our pre-eminent position on the world stage and to start planning for Olympic and Paralympic success in Rio in 2016. Building for the future all starts at grass roots level and triathlon in England, Scotland and Wales is going from strength to strength. I hope we can work even more closely with the Home Nations in future, helping them to build participation and strengthening the performance pathways from their regional talent academies right up through our World-Class Programmes." Ian’s term of appointment is for four years, starting with effect from 1 January 2013. Thanks to British Triathlon Federation for this information. {/exp:tagstripper:tagsToSave}
British Triathlon is delighted to announce the appointment of Brendan Purcell as the new Performance Director, and Ben Bright as the new Head Coach to work alongside Brendan. British Triathlon has enjoyed its most successful four-year cycle, culminating in a fantastic Olympic triathlon event with Team GB medals won on the home stage. The organisation has taken great care to work with key stakeholders in the programme to identify the skills needed to move the World-Class Programme forward from its current position, ensuring a platform for further world-leading success. British Triathlon particularly looked for a leader with strong influencing skills and experience of delivering on all the elements that make a difference in elite sport. In addition, the new leadership needed to build on the success of the Olympic Triathlon team, putting the key relationships (coach/athlete and support team) at the heart of the strategy required to produce sustained elite performance. Brendan has worked with elite sports programmes for over ten years, including a role leading High Performance Diving in Australia. He then joined the GB Canoe Sprint programme prior to the 2008 Olympic Games, and at the London 2012 Olympics, he led the coaching team supporting the successful medal-winning GB Canoe Sprint team. Ben, a previous Junior World Triathlon Champion himself, coached a number of World Championship winning triathletes before taking on the role of Men’s Olympic Coach within the British Triathlon Olympic Performance Group - a group created in May 2011 to focus solely on the British Triathlon Olympic Squad and who helped successfully guide the squad to British Triathlon’s best ever results in the Olympic Games. On appointing Brendan and Ben, British Triathlon Chief Executive Zara Hyde Peters OBE said: “I am delighted to introduce Brendan as our new Performance Director and Ben into a new permanent role as Head Coach. “Brendan’s background of working with elite athletes within an Olympic multi-medal winning programme is exceptional. He has shown he has the essential skills to be an excellent leader of the programme supporting our Lottery funded elite athletes and I have great faith in what he will achieve. “Ben’s experience in Olympic discipline elite triathlon is recognised throughout this country and the world. He is greatly respected amongst those he has worked with – both athletes and coaches. This respect is well deserved and will contribute massively to his success in fulfilling the Head Coach role alongside Brendan. “I believe that in appointing both Brendan and Ben, British Triathlon will successfully address the challenges that lie ahead for the World Class programme and will continue to ensure that the GB Triathlon team leads the World.” Thanks to British Triathlon for providing the above content {/exp:tagstripper:tagsToSave}

In a glittering night of sports awards, British Triathlon was announced this week as the Sport Governing Body of the Year in the UK. The award, sponsored by the Daily Telegraph was presented at the annual UK Sport Industry Awards ceremony in London. The event was attended by 1,750 key figures from the world of sport, including a huge number of high-profile media, entertainment and sporting celebrities alongside the most influential figures in British and European sport. The judging panel, which came from a broad spectrum of sport and business, analysed the six shortlisted governing bodies’ (British Triathlon, ECB, British Cycling, UKA, England Netball and the Rugby Football League) delivery across four key pillars of governance – Performance, Leadership, Community and Ethics. For British Triathlon, who also won in 2010, the award is true recognition of the unstinting hard work and commitment made by many to the continued progress and development of triathlon in the UK. Dr Sarah Springman CBE, British Triathlon President added: “We are delighted that British Triathlon has been awarded the 2012 Sport Governing Body of the Year. We have been fired up by the 2012 Olympics and our four year plan reflects this, with challenging targets that we have exceeded every year in delivering outstanding performance on the world class stages that we create, and raising the profile and inspiring people to take part in this fast growing, dynamic sport. “The judges considered leadership, ethics and governance, performance and community and it’s hugely gratifying to have been recognised by the sports industry twice in three years. “We are indebted to our strong set of sponsors and partners who are fully aligned with our purpose, working with us to ensure success. And, of course, we are all looking towards two very important dates in Hyde Park in August. I would encourage everyone to take the opportunity to support our very talented athletes on 4 and 7 August when triathlon promises to be one of the most popular mass spectator events of the London 2012 Olympic Games."
