Cook Islands Triathlon Association President Geoff Stoddart reports as the federation reflects on its previous year’s activites. Read the full Cooks Islands annual report In the lead up to Christmas the warm climate lends itself to shorter distance races which were held with strong turnouts from both competitive and recreational triathletes, whilst the popular Air New Zealand International race held over the standard distance was a success and was publicised in NZ Multisport magazine. The Weetbix New Zealand sponsored kid’s triathlon was held in December as the world’s largest children’s triathlon project moved across the Pacific for a single leg of their series. A successful women’s triathlon was also hosted by the Federation, attracting 22 individuals and eight teams to compete over a short race. A total of ten Cook Islands triathletes made the trip to Gold Coast for the ITU Triathlon World Championships backed up with a healthy support team. The island also played host to the Pacific Mini Games with four top ten performances for the host nation with the ITU running an event management and technical course alongside the Games. In September Geoff Stoddart was elected as President of the Oceania Triathlon Union, the Confederation responsible for triathlon development within the Oceania region. {/exp:tagstripper:tagsToSave}
The Pacific island nation of Cook Islands hosted the Oceania event management and technical course which was run in conjunction with the South Pacific Mini Games in Rarotonga. Pulling in a wide range of participants from experienced athletes to interested volunteers, ITU Level 3 technical official Terry Sheldrake from New Zealand ran the course with attendees from Papau New Guinea, Fiji, Solomon Islands, New Zealand and Cook Islands. Throughout the four days the course covered all aspects of officiating and managing elite triathlon events, including senior rolls, expectations, media, health and safety, responsibilities and requirements. Concluding with a successful running for the South Pacific Mini Games Triathlon, all of the course participants were able to experience technical and event duties at an international competition which they will be able to take back to their National Federations to further enhance the development of the sport across the Oceania Confederation. First home for the men was David Esposito from New Caledonia in a time of 2 hours 6 minutes and 39 seconds. He was followed home by Tahiti's Laurent Barra. In third place was Aymeric Levasseur, also from New Caledonia. In the women's division, it was a New Caledonia whitewash, with Erica Ellis in first place (2:24:45), Catherine Grangeon in second place (2:28:35), and Kandy Point in third spot (2:31:27). Pacific Mini Games Triathlon Men Gold: David Esposito, New Caledonia Silver: Laurant Barra, Tahiti Bronze: Aymeric Levasseur, New Caledonia Women Gold: Erika Ellis, New Caledonia Silver: Katherine Grangeon, New Caledonia Bronze: Kandy Point, New Caledonia {/exp:tagstripper:tagsToSave}
The South Pacific Games open on Saturday August 25 in APIA, Samoa. The Olympic Distance Triathlon is the pinnacle race for the Island Nations of the Pacific and will field very strong teams from New Caledonia, Solomon Islands, Tahiti, Cook Islands and Guam. The triathlon follows on from the very successful ITU Community Coaching course conducted in Fiji in late June. Both the Solomon Islands Triathlon Association and Cook Islands Triathlon have continued the development of Triathlon, fielding competitive teams at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and now at the South Pacific Games in Samoa, and have qualified ITU coaches to work in their countries. Both Tahiti and New Caledonia have a long history of triathlon and will set the standard. Technical training for local officials has been delivered by ITU Oceania Representative Terry Sheldrake, and Competition Manager Ted Pearce, both from New Zealand. Coaches, officials and athletes are all taking triathlon to a higher level in the South Pacific. The Triathlon Technical and Media team are prepared for this important event and will bring you news of the results in the same weekend as the Hamburg BG Triathlon World Championships.
