There are still 18 days until the 2011 Guatape ITU World Cup, but organisers, officials and supporters are already looking forward to the future after the announcement of the official 2012 ITU World Cup schedule coincided with a press briefing last week. As local press gathered in Medellin last week Doctor Julio Roberto Gómez Gaitán - the main director of sports in the region - delivered the news that Guatape would be on the ITU World Cup circuit in 2012. Everyone packed into the room gave the news a round of applause. Guatape will be the fifth stop in a nine event World Cup series in 2012, with the elite races scheduled for July 1. The press briefing was to give more information about this year's event which is now just a few weeks away. It is the first time there has been a World Cup in Colombia since a 1992 race in San Andreas, and the briefing - led by Doctor Julio Roberto Gómez, Manager of Indeportes and general director of the Guatape World Cup, and Doctor José Luis Echeverry, President of the Colombian Triathlon Federation, included information on the route, the competitors and countries that will come to Guatape for the World Cup. The 2011 Guatape ITU World Cup will be a weekend full of international triathlon, with age-group races starting from 6.30am (local time) on Saturday November 5, before elite athletes race on Sunday November 6. Both elite start lists are full of ITU stars, including two-time Olympic medallist Simon Whitfield, World Cup winners Brent McMahon, Matt Chrabot, Mariko Adachi, Vendula Frintova, and the most successful athlete in world cup history, Vanessa Fernandes. Fernandes already has an incredible 20 world cup titles and is currently on the comeback trail, after taking a break from triathlon in the first half of 2011. Guatape, a small town in the region of Antioquia in Colombia, has gained momentum for the ITU Triathlon World Cup to be held in October this year with the successful 2011 Guatape ITU Triathlon Pan American Cup on Sunday, which also counted as the Caribbean Championships. Spain dominated the men's field with Jose Miguel Perez (ESP) and Miguel Angel Fidalgo (ESP) finishing first and second and Carlos Javier Quinchara Forero (COL) securing third place to meet local fans' expectations. The winner clocked 1 hour, 56 minutes and 36 seconds. In the women's field, Maydelin Justo (CUB) claimed gold, clocking 2:17:06. Carolina Grimaldo (COL) and Pamela Nascimento Oliveira (BRA) came in second and third respectively. According to the result, the Caribbean Championship titles went to Quinchara Forero and Justo. An ITU/PATCO Level II Coaches Course took place from 20th to 24th September in Guatapé, Colombia. A total of 19 coaches from Argentina, Aruba, USA, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama, Peru, Venezuela and Brazil participated in the event to increase their skills and knowledge for the development of the sports in the region. ITU Sport Development Manager, Alan Ley, Alberto Garcia from the Spanish Triathlon Federation, and Rodrigo Milazzo of PATCO led the five-day course by conducting presentations and practical training sessions. The course venue was set in the Hotel Hosteria Los Recuerdos, located a few kilometers outside of Guatape, where participants had easy access to a swimming pool, trails to run on, and rolling hills to cycle on. The Level II course is designed for coaches who train Junior and U23 athletes competing in Continental and World Cup events, with the ultimate goal being the Olympic Games. Not only are all participants provided coaching sessions in swim, bike and run, the importance of communication and networking is also emphasised during the course. Rodrigo Milazzo, said: “This was a very good experience, exciting and rewarding, not only because we are in the process of delivering the real purpose of sport development in the region, but mainly because we are engaged with incredible coaches who we know. Junior division (16-19) is now approved to compete at the Pan American Triathlon in Bogotá. They will be doing one loop swimming (750mts), three bike laps (20km) and will complete a two loop course in the running portion.
