POWERADE® Official sponsor of the BAY ISLANDS TRIATHLON The Powerade Bay Islands Triathlon will take place this next March 25th, in the island of Roatan, part of the Bay Islands in Honduras. An international sports event which has gained importance year after year nationally, and internationally. Honduras is no exception to the rapid growth of the sport of triathlon, where since the creation of this event the country has seen the number of events grow from 2 a year to up to 10 a year including duathlons, and aquathlons. The Powerade Bay Islands Triathlon attracts more than 150 athletes each year from several countries around the world. In 2005 we counted with the presence of Greg Bennett, Matt Reed, and Susan Williams. The presence of professional triathletes brings an important segment of the press to the island of Roatan, along with family members and friends. The Powerade Bay Islands Triathlon is also known as one of the most beautiful triathlon destinations, as well as one of the most difficult due to the hilly terrain, and natural beauty of Roatan. This year, the official sponsor of the Bay Islands Triathlon is Powerade®, a brand which is closely related to sports, which with its high hydrating ability, is an important element in enabling athletes the successful completion of an event of this nature. In addition Powerade® contains vitamin B, which prevents muscular fatigue, and helps metabolize carbohydrates as a source of energy and comes in different flavors like Lemon-Lime, Orange-Mandarin, Blue Avalanche. It is a great pleasure for Powerade® to sponsor an event of this magnitude and promises to be very close to each one of the athletes, supporting them and hydrating them. During the Powerade Bay Islands Triathlon athletes will give the very best of themselves thanks to their great physical condition, this will make it a very competitive event, highlighting the importance of the sport in the world. {/exp:tagstripper:tagsToSave}

Roatan, Bay Islands The island of Roatan, the largest island of the Bay Islands in Honduras, has the privilege to host the Bay Islands Pan-American Cup Triathlon, for the fourth consecutive year. We are very interested in supporting this important sports event, and will do everything possible to make sure it grows and improves each year, said the new Mayor of Roatan, Mr. Dale Jackson. The islanders are excited, and are getting ready to host about 250 triathletes from different parts of the world. The Island of Roatan has given the sport a very warm welcome, and about 100 volunteers are expected to come and help with the event on March 25, 2006. We have several professional athletes already confirmed, and more will come, said event organizer, Leslie Poujol Brown. We are getting registrations on a daily basis, and I think this year we will reach our goal of 250 triathletes coming to the island, she added. Among the countries already confirmed are France, Canada, United States and some Central American countries. This triathlon is considered among the most challenging, and equally beautiful in the ITU/PATCO calendar of the Americas. With the swim in crystal clear waters over coral gardens; the 18, 19 and 20 percent incline hills leaving the beach on the bike course; and a run on private roads, and shady trails overseeing the Caribbean waters; it is easy to understand why many triathletes are coming back year after year. Host Hotel, Mayan Princess Hotel, has started preparations to host the start and finish lines of the race, plus the awards ceremonies. The official airline Taca Airlines, at www.taca.com, has given discounts of 20% off on all North American fares, including Toronto, out of Canada; and 30% discounts on Latin American airfares going to Honduras. To make things more convenient, the race management has teamed up with its travel partner, TropicalRez.com who has secured the best hotel rates on the island for the week of the event. We really want people to feel comfortable traveling to this little piece of paradise, said Leslie, and we go out of our way to make sure everybody is well taken care of once they reach Honduras. The organizers and sponsors of this race are working hard to make sure all ITU safety standards are met, while giving the event a very unique tropical flavor, and staying in touch with every aspect of nature that surrounds this incredible island. AUSTRALIA EARNS GOLD AT THE PORT ROYAL BAY ISLANDS TRIATHLON New Course Record by Greg Bennett Roatan, Bay Islands Australian Triathlete Greg Bennett, sets a new record for the very difficult course of the Port Royal Bay Islands Triathlon, in 1:57:46. The first time the course is completed under two hours. Bennett was 4th in Athens Olympic games, and has been ranked in first place for 2003 and 2002. Susan Williams of USA, defending champion of the race, and bronze medallist in Athens was the female champion of the day with a time of 2:13:07. Upcoming Costa Rican triathlete, Leonardo Chacon, starts his first race of the year with a very impressive second place of 2:00:42. Leonardo is Central Americas champion and has a very promising future in the ITU rankings. Laura Bennett was the second place female with another outstanding time of 2:18:39. Third place finishers Matthew Reed of USA, and Genevieve Pellerin of Canada completed the course in 2:02:33 and 2:20:11 respectively. The pool of professional athletes though small was of great quality and the 16 athletes seemed very satisfied with the course and their performance. This is the hardest course Ive done, said Australian Greg Bennett, who came to Honduras when he heard of the hills that are part of the course. Bennett and his wife Laura Reback Bennett live in Florida, and both felt that it would be a great benefit to race in a difficult course as their first race of the year. I love coming back to Roatan, said Susan Williams, and added she likes the hills on this course. The day was picture perfect with the added benefit of a slight cold front which kept temperatures and humidity under control. The age group competition also presented some future professional hopefuls with best overall age group time of 2:38 28 by Jeremey Crane of Honduras; followed by 2:40:08 by Victor Rodriguez also of Honduras and Jose Samayoa with 2:40:54 from Honduras. It is impressive to see these Honduran athletes completing this difficult course with substandard equipment in most cases, and little formal training, said an American age grouper. They have an incredible physical condition with much more to give in the future, he added. Ends.
