Thanks to every federations for sending teams and for your participation in all the activities of the weekend. Thanks also to the ITU development for the resources to present the youth coaching course. By all reports the kids are working hard and the coaches are learning even more. Thanks to all for your involvement! A special word of thanks to Race Directors Rick Fulton and Shaun Shelton: they have taken event organizing in Africa to a new level – from the in house TV production team to the podium awards for the Elite athletes! Thanks to the team of the Zimbabwe Triathlon Association (they were the LOC) for the detail to athlete’s services, protocol and the great awards evening. I’ve never seen so many flowers at a triathlon event – you’ve created a special occasion for the athletes! We will soon follow up with the implementation of new policies and a vision for the African Cups and Championships events for 2007 and 2008. In the mean time we look forward to the ATU Duathlon Championships that will take place on 6 May in Worcester near Cape Town and first ever ITU World Cup in Richards Bay on 11 June 2006. All the best – Liesbeth Stoltz, President African Triathlon Union {/exp:tagstripper:tagsToSave}
Liesbeth Stoltz, President of the African Triathlon writes….check out the photos in the gallery - some behind the scene moments at the African Triathlon Championships in Nyanga, Zimbabwe. The photos show that something special can be created with enthusiasm and ingenuity. There were power failures and no telephone lines and although the bill for the weekend, (to be paid in cash), was 1 billion Zim dollars the LOC had wide smiles, lots flowers, sponsors and a great look! Race Directors Rick Fulton and Shaun Sheldon attended the ITU Event Organisers workshop in Richards Bay and they took great pride in following the letter of the book in organizing the event. I do not know if everyone realizes how far the US dollars that ITU Sport Development spends in Africa can go! Thanks for your support - we had a great event! {/exp:tagstripper:tagsToSave}
Athletes from five African nations (South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Mauritius, Kenya) assembled at Troutbeck Inn in Nyanga, Zimbabwe for the All African Triathlon Championships. Nyanga lies in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe at an altitude of over 2, 500m above sea level. Coupled with the altitude the athletes had to contend with one of the most arduous courses on the triathlon circuit. In the Men’s Elite race Erhard Wolfaardt from South Africa took the lead from the start of the swim and never relinquished it throughout the day. This young U23 talent from South Africa finished more than 10 minutes ahead of his nearest rival. Rory Mackie, overall second on the day, caught up after a huge deficit on the swim to move into podium contention at the end of the bike. He had an excellent run on this exacting course to take the silver medal on the day. Travis Campbell from South Africa took the bronze medal. In the women’s race Kate Roberts (South Africa) had another good swim and came out of the water with a slight lead on Riana De Lange (South Africa). They worked well together on the bike but could not hold off Corinne Berg, also from South Africa, who rode through the field solo to catch the two leaders. The run was a hard fought battle between the two athletes from South Africa with Kate Roberts first across the line and Corinne Berg in silver medal position only 3 seconds behind Roberts. Riana De Lange held on for the bronze medal. The All African Championships was a huge success thanks to the excellent team work of the Zimbabwe Triathlon Association. Men: 1.
