At the Sydney 2000 Olympics games, Whitfield sprinted past German Stephen Vukovic to become Triathlons first Male Olympic Champion. In 2002 he followed up his Olympic success by winning the 2002 Manchester England Commonwealth Games Gold. In 2004 he finished 11th at the Athens Olympic Games, when he told his close friend and newly crowned Athens Olympic Games Champion Hamish Carter of NZL that 11th was actually two firsts Hamish responded “that’s great loser math”. In 2008 Whitfield participated in one of the sports greatest moments when four athletes entered the stadium at the Ming Tombs Reservoir in Beijing China and sprinted for Olympic glory. Whitfield finished 2nd to Jan Frodeno of Germany who evened the score from Sydney 2000. Whitfield has won 14 World Cups since his first ITU race in Isigaki Japan in 1996 and has finished in the top 10 at the World Triathlon Championships 6 times.
