Foto ITU del Año 2012: semana ocho, Auckland
La Gran Final de Auckland fue el escenario ideal para lograr imágenes hermosas para el concurso de la Foto ITU del Año 2013. Luego de una larga temporada que incluyó eventos de la envergadura de los Juegos Olímpicos, los atletas necesitaron hacer uso de toda su energía extra para tener un buen rendimiento en la Gran Final. Las fotos tomadas en las carreras elite, Sub23, juveniles, y de paratriatlón son tan bellas que la selección de esta semana será particularmente difícil.
Las medallistas olímpicas Erin Densham (AUS) y Lisa Norden (SWE) finalizaron la carrera con una diferencia mínima. Sin embargo, Densham se había sentido enferma durante la semana anterior a la carrera y debió abandonar en la mitad del recorrido. Norden, con intoxicación antes de la competencia, logró llegar cuarta, posición suficiente para convertirse en la mejor triatleta femenina de la Serie Mundial 2012. La carrera masculina también fue muy cerrada. La puja por el título mundial sería entre Jonathan Brownlee (GBR) y Javier Gomez (ESP). A pesar de una lesión que lo afectó en las semanas previas, Gomez deleitó a la multitud cuando superó a Brownlee gracias a un veloz sprint a lo largo de la recta final.
