Comerford & Sindballe LD Champs

As balloons rose over Lake Burley Griffin the 2006 LD Triathlon World Championships began with over 630 athletes powering into, what for some, would be a long day in the sun. Four kilometers later on a two lap course that took them past Parliament House to the Kings Ave Bridge, the leaders emerged with Kieran Doe (NZL) leading fellow New Zealanders Stephan Sheldrake and Nathan Richmond around the 50 minute mark. First Australian out was Nick Hornman . The ladies race leader, Linda Gallo (USA) took 55 minutes and emerged in a pack of men about 3 minutes ahead of Johanna Daumas (FRA) and Manuela Ianesi (ITA). Australians Amelia Cox and Belinda Halloran were 6th and 7th on the transition to the 120km bike stage. Aussie Lachlan Lewis was last out of the water waving to the cheers of the crowd.

The bike course was the stage for several changes in position within all the categories as the four lap course took in Parliament Hill, the lake and wound its way towards Coppins Crossing. The climb back out of Coppins had people racing up on the first lap, then slowing, then even slower. Then by lap four, the wind came up making it harder for everyone, particularly the age groupers, some of whom were on their first lap. Kieran Doe, who had led Torbjorn Sindballe (DEN) by over one minute, found Sindballe was only two seconds behind him as he finished the first lap. Sheldrake and Richmond were involved in their own duel with a large pack, including Craig Alexander (AUS) over three minutes behind the leaders. Over with the women, Gallo still had over 2 minutes on Daumas, with Melissa Ashton (AUS), Bella Comerford (GBR) and Amelia Cox (AUS) rounding out the top five. Lap two found the men still locked in their positions while Daumas took over the lead from Gallo moving out to a two minute lead. Sara Gross (GBR) moved in to the top five and Edith Niederfriniger (ITA) entered the top ten.

Major movement in lap three saw Sindballe move into the lead by over 50 seconds to Doe, with then over eight minutes to the rest of the field. The women were still chasing Daumas who now had Melissa Ashton just less than two minutes behind and Comerford, over three minutes off the pace. Coming into the transition to the run stage Sinballe had almost six minutes over Doe and eleven to Richmond. Alexander moved into 6th just over 12 minutes behind the leader. Marino Vanhoenacker (BEL) transitioned in 11th place looking to make up over 16 minutes to reach the leader. Daumas extended her lead to three and a half minutes over Ashton, Comerford, Martina Dogana (ITA) and Niederfriniger who was now 5th over 7 minutes back.

With just 30k to go on the welcome flat three lap run of the southern edge of the lake it meant that there was still time left for major movements in the field to crown the 2006 World Champion. As the runners passed and re-passed the main race area, the spectators could easily follow the changes. Sindballe lost 2 minutes to Alexander on the first lap, and a further 4 to him on the second lap. It was shaping up to be a close finish with the possibility of an Australian World Champion. Melissa Ashton dropped out at the 10k mark with Comerford taking over second. As the laps wore on in the heat moving to 34C, Daumas surrendered her lead to Comerford, and then second place to Niedergriniger. Marino Vanhoenacker moved through the field each lap, steadily climbing the leader board as Sindballe held on to the lead.

The roar of the crowd alerted those at the finish that the new world champion was about to cross the line as Sindballe entered the finish chute in a time of 5:59:13. As his finisher’s medal was placed over his head, a Danish flag flew from the crowd to crown his achievement. Craig Alexander (6:00:35) held onto his second place, despite cramping in the last kilometers which caused him to stop every kilometer to stretch. Third was Marino Vanhoenacker from Belgium (6:02:22) a further three minutes behind the winner. Julien Loy, 6:02:46, (FRA) and Nathan Richmond, 6:04:54, (NZL) rounded out the top five.

Bella Comerford (GBR) was crowned the LD Triathlon World Champion as she finished in a time of 6:55:32 ahead of Edith Niederfriniger, 6:57:17, (ITA) and the early leader Johanna Daumas, 7:00:50, (FRA). The effort of the race clearly showed in Bella’s face as she grasped the finish tape in jubilation. Erika Csomor, 7:05:13 (HUN), the sole Hungarian entrant, was fourth with Martina Dogana (ITA) coming in fifth in a time of 7:05:37.

Torbjorn Sindballe quotes:
“I was 1 minute behind after the swim in 11th place. I overdid the bike, I died on the last 25 kilometers like every one else. I held onto the run, pushing doubting if I was going to make it. At 2 kilometers to go I heard he (Craig Alexander) was one minute 40 down so I kept pushing. I liked the course, very tough and very dry”.

“Could have run more conservatively for 2nd, but went for the win. He (Sindballe) was better on the day. Owed it to myself to go for win on home ground. I came home from the US on Tuesday to do this race. I’m out on my feet but the support (from the crowd) means a lot. I was cramping towards the end and had to stop every kilometer to stretch”.

El Campeonato de Triatlón de Larga Distancia de 2006 de Canberra dio comienzo con Una suelta de los globos que volaron sobre el Lago Burley Griffin. En ese momento más de 630 atletas se zambulleron en él, para lo que para algunos sería un largo día al sol. Tras cuatro kilómetros -en una carrera de dos vueltas que les hizo pasar desde el Parlamento hasta el Puente de Kinas Avenue- emergieron los líderes con Kirean Doe (NZL) a la cabeza junto con sus compatriotas Stephan Sheldrake y Nathan Richmond marcando un tiempo de 50 minutos. El primer australiano en salir del agua fue Nick Hornman. En la carrera de las mujeres, Linda Gallo (USA) marcó 55 minutos y se mezcló con un grupo de hombres aproximadamente con 3 minutos de antelación sobre sus perseguidoras Johanna Daumas (FRA) y Manuela Ianesi (ITA). Las australianas Amelia Cox y Belinda Halloran fueron sexta y séptima respectivamente en la transición a los 120 Km. bicicleta. La australiana Lachlan Lewis fue la última en abandonar el agua entre los aplausos del público.

Durante el segmento ciclista se produjeron multitud de cambios en las posiciones en todas las categorías gracias a que el trazado de las cuatro vueltas pasaba por el Monte del Parlamento, el lago y se enlazaba con Coppins Crossing. En el descenso volviendo de Coppins los atletas iban muy rápidos en la primera vuelta luego frenándose y cada vez mas despacio. Luego, en la cuarta vuelta, el viento empezó a soplar haciéndolo más difícil para todos, especialmente para los grupos de edad algunos de los cuales estaban en su primera vuelta. Kieran Doe, quien lideraba más de un minuto por delante de Torbjorn Sindballe (DEN), vio como al final de la primera vuelta estaba nada más que a dos segundos. Sheldrake y Richmond mantuvieron su propio duelo con un amplio pelotón que incluía a Craig Alexander (AUS) y que viajaba a más de tres minutos de los líderes. En la carrera de mujeres, Gallo aún mantenía los dos minutos de ventaja sobre Daumas, con Melissa Ashton (AUS), Bella Comerford (GBR) y Amelia Cox (AUS) en los 5 primeros puestos. En la segunda vuelta los hombres seguían manteniendo las mismas posiciones mientras que Daumas arrebató el liderato a Gallo y se despegó de ella hasta los dos minutos de ventaja. Sara Gross (GBR) se metió entre las cinco primeras y Edith Niederfriniger (ITA) entre las 10 primeras.

El mayor cambio en la tercera vuelta fue protagonizado por Sindballe que pasó a liderar la prueba con más de 50 segundos de ventaja sobre Doe y con más de 8 minutos sobre el resto de participantes. Las mujeres aún estaban persiguiendo a Daumas quien tenía ahora a Melissa Ashton menos de dos minutos por detrás de ella y a Comerford a más de tres. Al llegar a la segunda transición, Sinballe tenía casi 6 minutos de ventaja sobre Doe y once sobre Richmond. Alexander pasó a la sexta posición con más de 12 minutos de diferencia sobre el líder. Marino Vanhoenacker (BEL) hizo la transición en decimoprimer puesto pensando en recuperar los 16 minutos para alcanzar al líder. Daumas amplió su ventaja a tres minutos y medio por encima de Ashton, Comerford, Martina Dogana (ITA) y Niederfriniger quien era ahora quinta 7 minutos por detrás.

Con 30 Km. por delante -tres vueltas corriendo por la orilla sur del lago- aún quedaba tiempo para muchos cambios en la clasificación del Campeonato del Mundo de 2006. A medida que los corredores pasaban y volvían a pasar los espectadores pudieron seguir fácilmente los cambios. Sindballe perdió 2 minutos sobre Alexander en la primera vuelta y 4 en la segunda vuelta. Se estaba convirtiendo en una final disputada con la posibilidad de tener una Campeona austaliana. Melissa Ashton abandonó al paso por los 10 Km. dejando a Comerford en el segundo puesto. A medida que las vueltas pasaban, con una temperatura de 34ºC, Daumas cedió su liderato a Comerford, y más tarde el Segundo puesto a Niedergriniger. Marino Vanhoenacker ascendió a lo largo de cada vuelta escalando en la tabla de clasificaciones mientras que Sindballe mantuvo su liderato.

El rugido de la multitud alertó a los que estaban en la meta de que el nuevo Campeón del Mundo estaba apunto de cruzar la línea cuando Sindballe la traspasó con un tiempo de 5:59:13. Cuando la medalla fue colgada de su cuello, una bandera Danesa voló de entre el público hacia él. Craig Alexander (6:00:35) llegó en segunda posición a pesar de los retortijones que en los últimos kilómetros le hicieron pararse en cada kilómetro. El tercero fue el belga Marino Vanhoenacker (6:02:22) tres minutos por detrás del ganador. Julián Loy (FRA), 6:02:46 y Nathan Richmond (NZL), 6:04:54 cerraron los 5 primeros puestos.

Bella Comerford fue proclamada Campeona del Mundo de Triatlón de Larga Distancia finalizando con un tiempo de 6:55:32 por delante de Edith Niederfriniger (ITA), 6:57:17, y, la en un principio líder, Johanna Daumas (FRA), 7:00:50. Se vio claramente el esfuerzo de la carrera en la cara de Bella cuando pasó con jubilo la meta. Erika Csomor (HUN), 7:05:13, la única húngara en pasar meta, fue cuarta con Martina Dogana (ITA) en quinto lugar con un tiempo de 7:05:37.

“Estaba un minuto por detrás después de la natación en décimo primer puesto. Me exigí mucho sobre la bici, quedé totalmente agotado en los últimos 25 Km. igual que todo el mundo. Aguanté en la carrera preguntándome si iba a lograrlo. A 2 km. para el final oí que (Craig Alexander) estaba a 1 minuto 40 así que seguí empujando. Me gustó la carrera, muy dura y muy seca.”

“Podría haber corrido de un forma más conservadora para mantener el segundo puesto, pero fui a por la victoria. (Sindballe) fue mejor hoy. Debía ir a por la victoria en casa. Vine a casa desde los Estados Unidos el jueves para correr esta carrera. Estoy que no puedo pero los ánimos (del público) hacen mucho. Estaba con retortijones hasta el final y tuve que pararme cada kilómetro”

“Un día terrible. Enfermo desde el Ironman Hawai. Peor con la nieve del miércoles. No estoy seguro si con buena salud. Dormido en natación y bici, intenté acelerar en la segunda vuelta pero nada. En la carrera quise entrar entre los 10 primeros, séptimo en segunda vuelta. Sigue adelante, aún hay una oportunidad”

“Muy caluroso pero las nubes ayudaron. Muy dura la carrera. Muchas subidas, cansada y abatida. Concentrada, tuve que darlo todo en el último kilómetro ya que alguien gritó que la italiana estaba detrás de mi.”
