African Junior Camp a Success

by World Triathlon Admin on 12 Dec, 2007 12:00

On 10th December the first ever African Junior Camp hosted in Potchefstroom, South Africa, came to an end. Potchefstroom proved to be a wonderful venue for the camp with ample safe roads to ride on and tremendous support from the local people in terms of facility use, medical assistance and accommodation and catering.

The week long camp assembled athletes and coaches from 7 member countries of the African Triathlon Union and, under the guidance of head coaches, Jamie Turner (AUS) and Bobby McGee (USA), attention was given to skill development and training in all 3 disciplines. Training started at 6:30am daily and after a full day of activities the athletes and coaches gathered for evening lectures on a variety of topics including ITU rules and racing, mental skills, race strategy, pack riding skills and numerous other topics.

On the final evening the athletes and coaches were treated to an awards evening and traditional South African Braaivleis (barbecue). Conrad Stoltz, two times Olympian and three-time Xterra World Champion, shared his experiences of his long triathlon career and encouraged his young African triathlon counterparts to dream big things and at the same time get the right coaching help to steer them on the right path to success.

Atherton Squire (Zimbabwe): Regional Development Coordinator for the African Region, had this to say about the success of the camp:
The first African Junior Triathlon Camp organised and directed by Libby Burrell, ITU Sport Development Director, was a resounding success for both the participants and the NF coaches from the 7 African countries in attendance. Testimony to this was the sadness that the athletes displayed on the last day when they had to leave to return home. The athletes showed great commitment to all tasks and the end result was a huge improvement in running, cycling and swimming skills and the potential for coaches to take their new gained knowledge back home to elevate their home programs. Jamie Turner and Bobby McGee ensured a very high standard of coaching and this filtered down to all involved to keep the program at a very high level of professionalism. The ever present Libby Burrell was an inspiration to all those involved.

Libby Burrell, ITU Sport Development Director, said:
There is no doubt in my mind that Regional Camps such as these are the starting point for regions to develop and advance the athlete and coaching talent in the sport. It was exciting to see the commitment and discipline of the young athletes at the camp and I am confident that with continued support such as this we will be able to take this talent and develop it through to 2012 and beyond to make sure that Africa is on the podium in a major event in the not too distant future.

The ITU-BG African Junior Camp is the final sport development event for 2007.
