Beijing Team Spotlight: GBR

The British team for the Olympic Games is a complementary mix of youth and experience. Remarkably, every member of the British squad has claimed a world championship title, demonstrating their pedigree of winning on the big occasion.  However, an Olympic medal has thus far proved elusive.

Tim Don is the only British triathlete to have competed at an Olympic Games before, placing tenth in Sydney and 18th in Athens. The 2006 world champion will start as one of the favourites for the Olympic title despite breaking his elbow on the Beijing course in last year’s test event.

Will Clarke
has endured a mixed season, but looks to be coming to form at the right time. Having claimed the under23 world championship title in 2006, Clarke was Britain’s top finisher at both the 2007 world championships and Beijing world cup. His victory at the British championships at the end of July will have given him a confidence boost heading to China.

Twenty year old Alistair Brownlee made his mark with a silver medal in his second career world cup in Greece last year. The 2006 junior world champion took the under23 world championship win in Vancouver earlier this year, demonstrating the continued strength of the British Triathlon development programme. He could be one to watch despite having not competed on the Beijing course before.

The men will line up on the Beijing pontoon at 10am (all times UTC/GMT +8 hours).  Click here for start times in your area

On the women’s side Britain can boast the current world champion, Helen Tucker. The Welsh athlete’s return to form following two years of prolonged injury has been nothing short of remarkable.  However, the cold of Vancouver is a far cry from the heat and humidity of Beijing and Tucker will have to adapt well to the conditions if she is to be in the mix for a medal.

Tucker will be joined on the pontoon by the breakthrough athlete of the year, eighteen year old Hollie Avil. Having taken to the podium in her two debut world cup races, the 2007 junior world champion has looked like a star of the future. Her participation in Beijing will have come as a shock to many, and could stand her in good stead for her home Olympics in London in four years time.

The elite women’s race will go on Monday August 18 at 10am Beijing time.  Click here for start times in your area

If your national broadcaster is not airing the men’s and women’s triathlon competitions, you can track the race live on triathlon.org for live text and live timing from both races.

Tim Don is the only member of the British Olympic triathlon team with previous Olympic experience

Helen Tucker wins the 2008 world championships
