Docherty & Tanner NZL Champs

The cream came to the top at the Wellington ITU Triathlon Oceania Cup this weekend, which doubled as the New Zealand national championships

Beijing Olympic bronze medalist Bevan Docherty and 2006 world cup winner Debbie Tanner were victorious. Docherty ran away from a huge group off the bike and Tanner kicked clear of her major competition, Nicky Samuels and Rebecca Spence, after the three had ridden away from the women’s field on the 40km bike.

Conditions were superb if a little on the cold side, with little or no wind and overcast skies greeting the 600 competitors in the age group and elite races based at Waitangi Park on the Wellington waterfront.

The men’s race resembled a freight train with the field emerging from the water in one large group. All the pre-race favorites, including Docherty, were right in the thick of it.

Off the bike it was Wellington’s own Martin van Barneveld who put the foot down, clearing a 50 metre gap on the rest of the field with Docherty, Clarke Ellice and Graham O’Grady in close attention.

Docherty made his move midway through the run, looking comfortable as he ran clear of Ellice and O’Grady to take the win by 20 seconds.

“Overall that was a good day,” said Docherty.

“The swim was flat and with the quality of the swimmers in the race it was always going to be tough to break away. The size of the break on the bike again meant we were all going to stay together and it would come down to the run. I would have liked a tougher bike but that’s okay.

“I paced myself well on the run and was never in any discomfort and finished strong. A national championship is nice for sure.”

The women’s race played out differently with the leading three of Tanner, Spence and Samuels riding together to put a couple of minutes on the field at the end of the bike.

First out of transition was Tanner and for the first time this season the Beijing Olympian found her running rhythm to finish 13 seconds ahead of Samuels with Spence in third. Just behind Spence was Kate McIlroy as the third elite across the line as Spence was racing the under23 category.

“I’m stoked, from the start that was a good race,” said Tanner.

“I looked around on the swim, so no one around other than Rebecca so put my head down and went for it. Nicky caught us on the bike and she and Rebecca worked so hard, we all did and put some time on Kate [McIlroy].
“The run was great, I feel like I am back in the groove for the first time this season. I have won a national title before but not for a while, I’m stoked, this is great.”

Los mejores triatletas llegaron este fin de semana a la Copa de Oceanía ITU de Wellington, la cual era valedera para los campeonatos nacionales de Nueva Zelanda.

El medallista de bronce en los Juegos Olímpicos de Beijing Bevan Docherty y la ganadora en la copa del mundo de 2006 Debbie Tanner fueron los campeones. Docherty se distanció de un gran grupo en la salida de la bicicleta y Tanner logró abrirse hueco entre sus mayores rivales, Nicky Samuels y Rebecca Spence, después de que las tres se distanciasen del resto de las triatletas en los 40 km de la bicicleta.

Las condiciones fueron magníficas, un cielo ligeramente cubierto y sin viento, dieron la bienvenida a los 600 triatletas de grupos de edad y élite en el Parque Waitangi en la costa de Wellington.

La carrera masculina se pareció a un tren de carga con los triatletas saliendo del agua en un gran grupo. Todos los favoritos a priori, incluido Docherty, estaban dentro del mismo.

El triatleta de Wellington Martin van Barneveld fue el primero en poner los pies en el suelo tras la bicicleta, consiguiendo una ventaja de 50 metros sobre el resto, con Docherty, Clarke Ellice y Graham O’Grady siguiéndole de cerca.

Docherty decidió atacar en la mitad del recorrido a pie, consiguiendo una cómoda ventaja de 20 segundos sobre Ellice y O’Grady.

“En general ha sido un gran día,” dijo Docherty.

“La natación fue en aguas tranquilas y con la calidad de los nadadores en la carrera fue siempre difícil de romperla. El tamaño del grupo en la bicicleta hacía muy difícil también que el grupo se rompiese por lo que llegaríamos juntos a la carrera a pie. Me hubiese gustado una bicicleta más dura, pero ha estado bien.”

“Puse mi ritmo en la carrera a pie y nunca me encontré incómodo y terminé fuerte. Un campeonato nacional siempre es agradable.”

La carrera femenina se desarrolló de forma diferente, en donde las tres líderes Tanner, Spence y Samuels, rodaron juntas para conseguir una ventaja de dos minutos sobre el resto de la categoría al final de la bicicleta.

La primera en salir de la transición fue Tanner y por primera vez esta temporada la Olímpica en Beijing encontró su ritmo de carrera, para terminar con 13 segundos de ventaja sobre Samuels. Spence fue la tercera en cruzar la meta y por detrás de esta llegó Mcllroy que finalizó en tercer lugar ya que Spence corría en categoría Sub23.
“Estoy contenta, desde el principio ha sido una Buena carrera,” dijo Tanner.

“Miré a mi alrededor en la natación y no vi a nadie a nadie excepto a Rebecca, por lo que agaché la cabeza y ataqué. Nicky se unió a nosotras en la bicicleta y ella y Rebecca trabajaron tan duro, que conseguimos meter algo de tiempo sobre Kate [McIlroy].”

“La carrera a pie fue genial, me siento bien y he vuelto a disfrutar por primera vez esta temporada. Había ganado anteriormente un título nacional, pero ya hace tiempo, estoy feliz, esto es genial.”
