World Triathlon

The irrepressible Vanessa Fernandes has done it again.  The Portuguese star won her fourth consecutive European Championship in Copenhagen, Denmark today, adding another title to an already impressive 2007 campaign.  The win never really seemed in doubt as the world number one virtually led the race from start to finish.  She was first after the swim but had 15 women all just 11 seconds behind her, including her compatriot Anais Moniz, last year’s junior women’s champion.

On the 40-kilometer bike course, Fernandes didn’t push too hard and chose to stay among the leaders.  She headed out onto the run with 25 other women nipping at her heels, all within 18 seconds of each other.  The group included several worthy challengers such as Nicola Spirig, Ricarda Lisk and a host of Austrians including reigning Olympic champion Kate Allen, Eva Dollinger and Tania Haiboeck. 

But if there was any doubt Fernandes would falter in her bid for a fourth championship, it was quickly dismissed in the 10-kilometer run course.  In typical Fernandes fashion, she pushed the pace on the run and distanced herself from the rest of the field.  After the first lap, she was up 27 seconds on the chase pack that was narrowed down to Spirig, Brit Michelle Dillon, Allen and Lisk.  Mid-way through the final leg Fernandes’ lead extended to 48 seconds and it was clearly evident who was going to stand atop the European podium once again.

Fernandes continued to assert herself as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, European triathlete in history, winning the title with a time of 2:02:36.  She becomes the first women to win four straight European crowns, and the first to do it since Dutchman Rob Barel won the first four men’s races from 1985 to 1988.

Olympic gold medalist Kate Allen came across the line to win silver, just edging out Nicola Spirig by two seconds.

Whitcombe just missed out on the podium and finished in fourth place for the second consecutive year.  Lisk came across the line for fifth spot.  Other notables include Dillon in sixth place, and last year’s runner-up Anja Dittmer in seventh spot.
The elite women’s field contained 62 from 25 countries that raced in windy and cloudy conditions.

Earlier in the day, 40 junior women took the start line.  Brit Hollie Avil came out of the water in second place and put in the work during the bike course to lead the field heading into the second transition.  Avil blistered the run course with the fastest time and cruised to the junior women’s European title.  Last year’s bronze medalist Rebecca Robisch of Germany finished 21 seconds behind Avil to take the silver while another Brit, Kirsty McWilliam came across the line for the bronze.

La imparable Vanessa Fernandes lo ha hecho otra vez. La estrella portuguesa ha ganado hoy por cuarta vez consecutiva el Campeonato de Europa en Copenhague, Dinamarca, añadiendo otro título a su ya impresionante campaña del 2007. La victoria nunca pareció estar en duda ya que la campeona del mundo virtual lideró la carrera de principio a fin. Ella fue la primera tras el segmento de la natación pero tenía a 15 mujeres a tan sólo 11 segundos, incluida su compatriota Anais Moniz, campeona femenina junior el pasado año.

En los 40 kilómetros del recorrido de la bicicleta, Fernández no puso un ritmo demasiado duro y prefirió quedarse entre los líderes. Ella encabezaba la carrera con otras 25 mujeres pegadas a sus talones, había una diferencia de 18 segundos entre la primera y la última. El grupo incluía a varias competidoras dignas como Incola Spirig, Ricarda Lisk y un gran número de austriacas, entre las que estaba la Campeona olímpica Kate Allen, Eva Dollinger y tania Haiboeck.

Pero si había cualquier duda de que Fernándes obtendría su cuarto campeonato, rápidamente fue disipada en los 10 kilómetros del circuito de la carrera. A la manera típica de Fernándes, ella aumentó el ritmo y se distanció del resto de participantes, Tras la primera vuelta, ella estaba 27 segundos por encima del grupo perseguidor que quedó reducido a Spirig, a la británica Michelle Dillon, a Allen y a Lisk. A medio camino del circuito la ventaja de Fernández se aumentó a 48 segundos y ya era evidente quien iba a estar en lo más alto del podium otra vez.

Fernándes continuó afirmándose como una de las más grandes triatletas de la historia, si no la más grande, ganando el título con un tiempo de 2:02.36. Ella se convierte en la primera mujer en ganar cuatro coronas europeas seguidas y la primera en hacerlo desde que el holandés Rob Barel ganase las primeras cuatro carreras masculinas del campeonato de Europa desde 1985 a 1986.

La medallista de oro Olímpica Kate Allen cruzó la meta en segunda posición y justo por detrás Incola Spirig a tan sólo dos segundos.

Whitcombe se quedó fuera del podium finalizando en cuarta posición por segundo año consecutivo. Lisk cruzó la meta en quinta posición. Otras favoritas como Dillon en sexta posición y la subcampeona del año pasado Anja Dittmer en séptima posición.

La categoría de Élite femenina reunió a 62 atletas de 25 países que corrieron en condiciones nubladas y de ventisca.

A primera hora del día, 40 mujeres junior tomaron la salida. La británica Hollie Avil salió del agua en segunda posición y trabajó durante el circuito de la bicicleta liderando en cabeza en la segunda transición. Avil corrió de manera eléctrica haciendo el tiempo más rápido y alzándose con el título europeo junior femenino. La alemana Rebecca Robisch medallista de bronce del año pasado finalizó a 21 segundos de Avil consiguiendo la medalla de plata, mientras que otra británica, Kirsty McWilliam consiguió la medalla de bronce.
