Flying Fernandes takes Salford

by World Triathlon Admin on 29 Jul, 2007 12:00

In typical fashion, Vanessa Fernandes of Portugal ran away from the field today at the 2007 Salford BG Triathlon World Cup to claim the 17th world cup win of her career in a time of 2 hours 2 minutes and 59 seconds.  The current European champion was 19 seconds faster then last year’s winner Samantha Warriner of New Zealand, who finished in second.  Athens Olympic champion Kate Allen of Austria rounded out the podium in third, another 6 seconds behind.
Fernandes looked in top form heading into next month’s World Championships in Hamburg, Germany with a race-best 33:32 10-kilometre run split.
A wetsuit swim and the absence of a number of the sport’s top swimmers meant 46 women would exit the water within one minute of each other and head out onto the 8-lap flat and fast bike course.  Without any significant hills or technical sections over the 40-kilometre bike course, any break away attempts were quickly quelled by the large peloton and the entire group entered second transition together.
Straight away on the run, Fernandes jumped to the lead and would never look back, winning her fourth world cup of the season and moves into second all-time in world cup wins.  The fight was for second place, with Warriner moving ahead early and finishing strong for her ninth career world cup podium.
Local favourite Andrea Whitcombe finished in fourth with Japan’s Kiyomi Niwata in fifth.
With her win, Fernandes moves into a commanding lead of the 2007 BG Triathlon World Cup Series with 239 points.  Niwata’s fifth moves her into a distant second with 163 points.  Young Kirsten Sweetland of Canada remains in third, only five points back.
