World Triathlon

As a strong believer in healthy living and sustainability, ITU was represented at the Global Forum for Sports and the Environment (G-ForSE).  Enrique Quesada, co-Technical Delegate for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games triathlon competition and ITU Director of Results and Rankings, attended the 3-day conference held in Alicante, Spain from October 4-6.  The largest database on environmental action in sports, G-ForSE is a platform for sports federations, sporting goods manufactures, event producers and sports enthusiasts to determine their roles in increasing environmental action and awareness in sports.

Quesada met with the Global Sport Alliance (GSA) President Mr. Tatsuo Okada to formally include ITU inside the GSA, a global network of sports enthusiasts that want to leave a healthy environment for future generations.

(President Okada) was very happy to include ITU, said Quesada.  While our full calendar is not yet confirmed, I committed to include all ITUs world championships inside the movement as an opportunity to identify ourselves with the green movement.

About 100 of different sport organizations sent delegates to Alicante including International Federations from motorcycling and volleyball and major event organizing committees including Beijing 2008, Vancouver 2010, Sochi 2014 and FIFA World Cup 2010.  Also in attendance were constructors, architects, sports equipment manufacturers, consulters, governments and non-Governmental Organizations.  The forum contained a number of presentations and debates focused of the environmental care and climate change.

All speakers pointed to transportation as the most important factor in pollution in sport events, and this is a global consequence of the way of life, not specifically any sport problem.  Transportation is responsible for up to 80% of the carbon emissions related to a sports event.

All delegates and speaker agreed that sport is:
- A very good tool to extend the environmental message
- An opportunity for development based on sport and environmental care
- Part of the solution and not a part of the problem
- An opportunity to engage the governments

As ITU moves forward in staging world class events globally, it remains committed to reducing and eliminating its carbon footprint.  ITU Headquarters is committed to the reduce, re-use and recycle mantra with composting, recycling, waste reducing and electricity saving practices.  ITU Executive Director Loreen Barnett is often seen riding her bicycle or electric scooter to the office.

La ITU, firme seguidora de un modo de vida saludable y sostenible, estuvo presente en el Foro Global del Deporte y el Medio Ambiente (G-ForSE) Enrique Quesada, co-Delegado Tcnico de los Juegos Olmpicos de Beijing 2008 en la competicin de triatln y Director de Resultados y Clasificaciones de la ITU, asisti a los tres das de conferencia que tuvieron lugar en Alicante, Espaa, del 4 al 6 de Octubre. G-ForSE incluye una larga lista de acciones medioambientales en el deporte que sirven de plataforma para determinar la posicin de Federaciones Deportivas, fabricantes de material deportivo, organizadores de eventos y otros, para incrementar la concienciacin y las prcticas medioambientales en el deporte.

Quesada se reuni con Mr. Tatsuo Okada Presidente de la Global Sport Alliance (GSA) para formalizar la inclusin de la ITU dentro del GSA, una red global de entusiastas del deporte que quieren dejar un medioambiente sano a las futuras generaciones.

(El Presidente Okada) estaba muy contento por la inclusin de la ITU, dijo Quesada. Aunque todo nuestro calendario an no est confirmado, me compromet en incluir todos nuestros campeonatos del mundo dentro del movimiento como una oportunidad de identificarnos con el movimiento verde.

Cerca de 100 organizaciones deportivas diferentes enviaron delegados a Alicante incluidas las Federaciones Internacionales de motociclismo y voleibol y los principales comits organizadores de eventos, incluidos Beijing 2008, Vancouver 2010, Sochi 2014 y la Copa del Mundo FIFA 2010. Tambin se dieron cita constructores, arquitectos, fabricantes de equipamiento deportivo, consultores, organizaciones Gubernamentales y no Gubernamentales. El programa del forum contena un nmero de presentaciones y de mesas redondas centradas en el cuidado del medio ambiente y en el cambio climtico.

Todos los ponentes sealaron al transporte como el factor ms importante de contaminacin en las pruebas deportivas, no siendo esta una consecuencia especfica del deporte, sino del estilo de vida actual. El transporte es responsable de hasta el 80% de las emisiones de carbono relacionadas a un evento deportivo.

Todos los delegados y ponente acordaron que el deporte es:
- Un muy buen instrumento para extender el mensaje ambiental
- Una oportunidad para el desarrollo basada en el deporte y cuidado del medio ambiente.
- Parte de la solucin y no parte del problema
- Una oportunidad de involucrar a los gobiernos.

Como la ITU se mueve en la organizacin de eventos a ecscala mundial, permanece comprometida en reducir y eliminar los niveles de carbono. La Direccin General de la ITU se compromete con el lema reducir, reutilizar y reciclar con el compostaje, reciclado, la reduccin de basuras y las prcticas de ahorro de electricidad. La Directora Ejecutiva de la ITU Loreen Barnett es vista a menudo dirigindose a su oficina en bicicleta o en su motocicleta elctrica.
