An ITU Event Organizers and Technical Officials Community Level Seminar was recently held in Apia. Terry Sheldrake, Oceania Triathlon Union President and Continental Coordinator, assisted in the seminar bringing his valuable knowledge to the participants.
The community course Sheldrake facilitated was well attended by 18 people and was held at the government building in the middle of the city area of Apia. All participants interacted well and displayed enthusiasm. Although many had not ever attended a triathlon, Sheldrake was very impressed on race day how they went about all tasks that had been assigned to them. More impressive was how much information that they had retained from participating in the course and event briefing.
The 18 pre-trained course participants were allocated volunteers (approximately 90) and they also did a great job within the event. Local volunteer event secretary Emily Cox (Australia) did a fantastic job in pulling together all event logistics and volunteers. The course included one and half days covering all aspects of officiating at an ITU event, along with one on one meetings with several individuals. Sessions were worked in with the key appointed officials work day. Planning for the practical component (race day) resulted in the 18 course officials meeting up with all event volunteers.
