ITU partners with Universal Sports Network to broadcast triathlon in US

The International Triathlon Union (ITU) and Universal Sports Network announced today a new multi-year rights agreement to air global triathlon events in the United States through 2018. The deal gives Universal Sports multiplatform rights, including exclusive TV and Internet rights, to ITU’s World Triathlon Series and its monthly magazine program.

The partnership allows Universal Sports to provide exclusive national coverage of major ITU events throughout the world including the upcoming World Triathlon Series event in Chicago, June 27-29, 2014, in preparation for the city’s World Triathlon Grand Final in 2015. The ITU World Triathlon Series is the sport’s premier global series that allows the world’s best athletes to compete head-to-head throughout the year.

“The USA is the birthplace of our sport and has a tremendous following there, so we are thrilled that Universal Sports Network will be broadcasting triathlon the next four years,” said ITU President and International Olympic Committee Member Marisol Casado. “Furthermore, Universal Sports, like ITU, is a young and competitive organization.  We look forward to collaborating with such a like-minded entity to continue to grow the sport of triathlon.”

“The sport of triathlon is undergoing tremendous growth in the U.S.,” said Robert James, Universal Sports’ senior vice president of content. “This new agreement with ITU showcases our commitment to that growth, and allows Universal Sports Network to be the number one destination for athletes and fans alike.”

Universal Sports Network is now available on Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications, Verizon FiOS, satellite providers DIRECTV and DISH and numerous regional cable and IPTV operators in markets across the country.

“Universal Sports has been a fantastic partner to the World Triathlon Series in the last few years. Their ever growing network is a phenomenal platform and will no doubt help to continue showcasing the dynamic sport of triathlon to the masses.”

The 2014 World Triathlon Series kicks off in Auckland on April 5-6. The eight-event series will touch down in every continent for the first time ever, with Cape Town and Chicago debuting on the calendar this year. The WTS will wrap up in Edmonton for the Grand Final August 26-September 1.
