The 2008 World Press Photo Awards were handed out in Amsterdam last Sunday. ITU Official Photographer Frank Wechsel received the 2nd place award in the category ‘Sports Action’ for his underwater shot of the men’s swim at the 2007 Rhodes BG Triathlon World Cup.

This year, a record number of 5,019 participants from 125 countries sent in their work. The total number of images submitted was 80,536. The jury gave prizes in 10 theme categories to photographers of 23 nationalities.

The awards ceremony was preceded by a three-day program of lectures, discussions and screenings of photography. Frank Wechsel did a presentation of his BG Triathlon World Cup photography and introduced his work to the audience of photographers, photo agencies, journalists, photo editors and publishers.

“A lot of people in the audience didn’t know too much about the Triathlon World Cup before,” said Frank Wechsel. “Now they do.”

On Wednesday, the exhibition of the prizewinners will be opened in Hamburg with an audience of 600 invited guests. The exhibition will subsequently visit over 100 locations around the world.

ITU events are well known for consistently producing stunning photography, thanks to its talented team of photographers.
