ITU and ASTC held a Technical Official Level 1 Seminar November 1-2 at the Tokyo College of Sports and Recreation. ITU lead facilitator, Melody Tan from Malaysia, was assisted by Jin Suzuki from Japan to train new technical officials on the application of ITU Competition Rules at the growing number of ITU and ASTC events in Asia.

Twenty-five participants attended this seminar from all over Japan coming from Aichi, Chiba, Fukuoka, Fukushima, Kanagawa, Kyoto, Niigata and Tokyo prefectures.

“It was a joy facilitating this class, as the participants all had a triathlon background either as an athlete or official. It was an interactive seminar during which participants asked intelligent questions and made every effort to speak in English at all times, ” said Tan.

Most participants were happy to be given the opportunity to be a part of this seminar, learn from ITU and ASTC race experiences and converse in English.

“We had many who wished to attend this seminar but we selected only 25, giving priority to those with good command of English and prior officiating experience. Japan Triathlon Union is also looking for younger, more dynamic officials for World Triathlon Series events and looking ahead towards 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. We want to ensure our officials will gain more international experience and will also be able to think on their feet and not just applying the rules,” said Kiriyo Suzuki, Executive Board member of Japan Triathlon Union.
