World Triathlon

Beijing Olympian Brad Kahlefeldt led home an Australian clean sweep of the 2009 Gold Coast ITU Oceania Championships in his first race in five months today.  Kahlefeldt said he was delighted with the fast and furious course raced today, which will be the same use for the 2009 Gold Coast ITU World Triathlon Championships in September.

Kahlefeldt edged out Beijing team mate Courtney Atkinson and Australian up-and-comer Dan Wilson, who finished second and third respectively.  In the womens event, Japans Kiyomi Niwata won the race but the Oceania title went to another Australian, 25 year old Sarah Crowley.

Its a good course flat and fast. I definitely want to win the World Champs and will be working towards that goal during the year, said Kahlefeldt. I was so disappointed after Beijing; I want 2009 to be a big year for me.

Early race leader Clayton Fettell lead off the front of the bike for the entire 40km and headed into the run with a 45 second lead from the chase group of 45. But after the first lap of the run the heat had decimated the field and it was the Australian trio Kahlefeldt, Atkinson, Wilson and the UKs Stuart Hayes that broke away. Hayes was first to lose touch. Kahlefeldt turned up the intensity in the final lap which no one could match to take his first victory in his first outing since hip surgery.

It definitely surprised me. The old Sticksy is back, explained Kahlefeldt. This is a good course for Worlds and will be a very quick run.

Kahlefeldt is unbeaten on this course, with four wins and must give him a huge confidence boost ahead of the World Championships.

The womens event came down to a running race, when Niwata, a noted runner making up serious ground in the final leg to claim victory.  Almost the entire womens field exited the swim together and stayed in a tight group during the entire bike leg before spreading out on the run.

Niwata, who actually trains on the Gold Coast, used her experience, pacing herself in the hot conditions to claim the win by almost 30 seconds over 2008 Under23 World Champion Daniela Ryf of Switzerland.  Team ITU alumna Barbara Riveros Diaz of Chile finished and impressive third only two seconds back of Ryf. 

The 2009 Oceania Champ, Crowley finished fourth overall.

El Olmpico en Beijing Brad Kahlefeld ha liderado hoy el barrido australiano en los Campeonatos de Oceana ITU de Gold Coast 2009, en su primera carrera tras cinco meses. Kahlefeldt se mostr encantado con el rpido y vertiginoso recorrido de hoy, el cual ser el mismo que se utilice para los Campeonatos del Mundo ITU de Triatln de Gold Coast en Septiembre.

Kahlefeldt super a su compaero de equipo en Beijing Courtney Atkinson y al debutante Dan Wilson,  que terminaron segundo y tercero respectivamente. En la prueba femenina, la japonesa Kiyomi Niwata gan la carrera pero el ttulo de Oceana fue para otra australiana, Sarah Crowley de 25 aos de edad.

Es un buen recorrido, llano y rpido. Definitivamente quiero ganar los Campeonatos del Mundo y para ello trabajar con ese objetivo durante todo el ao, dijo Kahlefeldt. Estaba tan decepcionada despus de Beijing, que quiero que el 2009 sea un gran ao para m.

Desde el principio de la carrera Clayton Fettel se puso en cabeza, liderando el segmento de la bicicleta y entrando en el segmento de carrera a pie con una ventaja de 45 segundos sobre el grupo perseguidor. Pero tras la primera vuelta de la carrera a pie el calor haba diezmado al pelotn y fue el tro australiano Kahlefeldt, Atkinson, Wilson y Stuart Hayes del Reino Unido quienes se distanciaron. Hayes fue el primero en perder el contacto. Kahlefeldt aument el ritmo en la ltima vuelta y no pudieron seguirle, para de esta forma hacerse con su primera victoria desde la operacin de cadera.

Definitivamente me sorprendi. El Viejo Sticksy ha vuelto, coment Kahlefeldt. Es un buen recorrido para los Campeonatos del Mundo y ser una carrera muy rpida.

Kahlefeldt est imbatido en este recorrido, con cuatro victorias que le dan una gran confianza de cara a los Campeonatos del Mundo.

La prueba femenina se resolvi en la carrera a pie, cuando Niwata, una destacada corredora consigui imponerse en el ltimo segmento para alcanzar la victoria. Casi todas las mujeres salieron juntas de la natacin y formaron un grupo apretado en el segmento de la bicicleta antes de diseminarse en la carrera a pie.

Niwata, que actualmente entrena en Gold Coast, utiliz su experiencia imponiendo su ritmo en las calurosas condiciones, para conseguir la victoria con casi ms de 30 segundos sobre la Campeona del Mundo Sub23 de 2008 Daniela Ryf de Suiza. La componente del Equipo ITU Barbara Riveros Diaz de Chile termin en un impresionante tercer puesto a tan slo dos segundos de Ryf.

La Campeona de Oceana de 2009, Crowley, termin cuarta en la general.
