World Triathlon

Sunday 30 June sees the closing date for applications to the 2019 KTF-ITU Triathlon Coaching Education Programme, the third such event in successive years that has seen the the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee (KSOC) investing in and developing not just in its own national triathlon set up but, by extension and in collaboration with ITU, the world’s.

The ITU coach development pathway covers four stages, building skills and knowledge starting at the Activator stage and then from ITU Level 1 to Level 2 Coach, with courses around the globe in collaboration with member National Federations. In 2017, the Korea Triathlon Federation (KTF) joined forces with ITU to deliver a comprehensive coaches education programme with Level 1 and Level 2 courses providing learning opportunities to a large number of coaches with different backgrounds.

Thanks to significant support from the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee’s input, the programme is able to be open to not just Korean and Asian coaches, but to all Official Development Assistance nations, with coaches from Fiji, India, Brazil, Rwanda, Belarus and Ghana among the 123 from 45 countries to have taken part to date.

“I have had the honour of working on the KSOC-KTF-ITU joint project in Incheon in 2017 and 2018 that have had a huge impact on coaches throughout the world,” said Tony Jolly, the ITU Coach Education Developer who has led the ITU facilitators’ team for the past two years.
 
“This is a unique program and it’s a great credit to the time, effort and resources that have been committed by KTF and KSOC, as well as the support from ITU, that it has been so successful.  Bringing coaches from developing nations to the project, taking them out of their comfort zones, has had a hugely beneficial impact, while ITU has brought together Coach Facilitators from established nations such as Mexico, Spain, Australia, Brazil, Portugal, Great Britain, Hong Kong and Singapore to share their knowledge and expertise. This has all had a profound effect upon the development of the coaches, with a unique ethos and spirit of sharing increasing the impact these courses have.”
 
This year will also see a focus on Facilitator development for the first time, continuing their development with the presence of highly skilled coach developers so that the global sport as a whole benefits. The third edition of the KTF-ITU Triathlon Coaching Education Programme takes place in Incheon, Korea from 29 October to 9 November 2019, and the deadline for applications from ODA recipient countries is 30 June.
