Norden Ends Silver Streak in Japan

Sweden’s Lisa Norden finally took victory at today’s Dextro Energy Triathlon – ITU World Championship Series leg in Yokohama, Japan.  The 24 year old Swede ended her streak of three silver medals with gold in a thrilling three woman sprint with a time of 1 hour 55 minutes and 56 seconds.  In second place, in a reversal of the Madrid race, was Andrea Hewitt of New Zealand, five seconds back.  In third was home favourite Juri Ide a further three seconds in arrears.  Temperatures soared to over 40 degrees celsius with 100% humidity.

“I wanted to step up to day and I showed I have the ability to be on the top of the podium,” said Norden. “When I started the season I didn’t intend to be a contender.  I’m extremely happy to be having the season I am.”

A group of four exited the water, including Annabel Luxford from Australia and Britain’s Liz Blatchford, together and hit the technical bike course; and although they would try to breakaway early in the race, they were caught on the third of eight laps by the chase group of 15.  Even with almost all of the top contenders in this lead group the tempo was still high as a fast approaching Nicola Spirig, winner of the London leg of the Dextro Energy Triathlon – ITU World Championship Series event last weekend was making ground.  Despite exiting the water 80 seconds down, Spirig would time trial the entire opening 30 kilometres on her own in a dominant display of cycling strength and catch the leaders for the final two laps.  With the heat of the day growing, the group were content to leave things for the 10-kilometre run.

The run started slowly with a large group of the top ten contenders all staying together, testing each other’s legs. It was not until the five kilometre mark that the pace quickened and streaks of daylight showed between competitors.  At the front Norden, Hewitt and Ide moved ahead and despite some surges in the final few kilometres all three stayed side by side.  With 400 metres to go Norden made her charge for the line, dropping both Hewitt and Ide.  Looking back with 20 metres to go, Norden could see she was alone and smiled to the crowd.  Hewitt managed to just beat Ide for second with a smart change of pace.

“I tried to put a couple to surges in the last lap not to leave thins down to the final.  But the girls came with me,” recalled Norden at the finish.  “I’ve lost two sprints this year already and did not want to have it happen again!”

“I was so far out there on the run that I was just hanging on all the way to the end.  It was a long sprint and I think it worked in Lisa’s favour,” replied Hewitt.

With her win Norden moves to within 120 points of series leader Emma Moffat heading into the Dextro Energy Triathlon – ITU World Championship Series Grand Final in three weeks time. Hewitt solidifies her third place ranking with her silver medal performance.

La sueca Lisa Norden se ha llevado finalmente la victoria en la prueba de Yokohama de las Series del Campeonato de Triatlón ITU Dextro Energy. La sueca de 24 años de edad terminó con su racha de tres medallas de plata, logrando el oro en un emocionante sprint final entre tres mujeres con un tiempo de 1 hora, 55 minutos y 56 segundos. En segundo puesto, a l contrario que en la carrera de Madrid, llegó la neozelandesa Andrea Hewitt a cinco segundos. En tercera posición llegó Juri Ide, la favorita local a 8 segundos. Las temperaturas alcanzaron los 40 grados con una humedad del 100%.

“Quería demostrar hoy que tengo la capacidad de estar en lo más alto del pódium,” dijo Norden. “Cuando comencé la temporada no tenía la intención de ser una aspirante. Estoy muy contenta con la temporada que estoy haciendo.”

Un pequeño grupo, entre las que estaban la australiana Annabel Luxford y la británica Liz Blatchford, salió junto del agua y se dirigió al recorrido técnico de la bicicleta y aunque intentarían pronto distanciarse, fueron atrapadas en la tercera de las ocho vueltas por el grupo perseguidor formado por 15 atletas. Aunque la mayor parte de las favoritas estaban en este grupo de cabeza y el ritmo de carrera era bastante alto, una veloz Nicola Spirig, ganadora la pasada semana de la prueba de Londres de las Series del Campeonato del Mundo de Triatlón ITU Dextro Energy, iba recortando la distancia. A pesar de salir del agua con una desventaja de 80 segundos, Spirig realizaría un contrarreloj en solitario de 30 kilómetros, realizando una demostración de fuerza sobre la bicicleta y dando caza a las líderes a falta de dos vueltas para el final. Con las temperaturas aumentando, el grupo se contentó con dejar que todo se decidiese en los últimos 10 kilómetros. 

La carrea a pie comenzó con mucho respeto, con diez de las principales favoritas juntas, probando como iban las piernas de unas y otras. No sería hasta la señal de los 5 kilómetros cuando el ritmo aumentó y se vieron los movimientos entre las participantes. En cabeza se colocaron Norden, Hewitt e Ide y a pesar de los continuos ataques en los últimos kilómetros, las tres permanecieron juntas codo con codo. A 400 metros para la meta, Norden se separó de Hewitt e Ide. Restando 20 metros para la meta, Norden echó un vistazo atrás y vio que iba sola por lo que se pudo permitir sonreír a la multitud. Hewitt logró hacerse con la segunda posición tras realizar un inteligente cambio de ritmo ante el que Ide no pudo responder.

“Intenté realizar un par de ataques en la última vuelta para no dejar que todo se decidiese al final. Pero las chicas me siguieron,” recordó la nórdica en la meta. “He perdido ya dos sprint este año y no quería que esto me volviese a suceder”

“Estaba tan bien al inicio de la carrera a pie que llevé el ritmo hasta el final hasta el final. Fue un sprint largo y creo que trabajé a favor de Lisa,” respondió Hewitt.

Con esta victoria la nórdica se sitúa a 120 puntos de la líder de las series, Emma Moffat a falta de la Gran Final de las Series del Campeonato del Mundo de Triatlón ITU Dextro Energy dentro de tres semanas.
