Portugal Sweeps U23 Euro Champs

Olympic silver medallist Vanessa Fernandes raced for the first time since the Beijing Olympic Games and showed no rust in a dominating performance. Fernandes took gold at today’s Under23 European Triathlon Championships in Pulpi, Spain. She crossed the line more than two minutes ahead of her closest competitor, fellow Olympian Yuliya Sapunova of the Ukraine who took the silver. France’s Jeanne Collonge grabbed the bronze.

Fernandes owned the race virtually start to finish. After exiting the water among the leaders in a 24-degree Celcius, non-wetsuit swim. Showing off her cycling prowess, Fernandes broke from the field on the first of six laps and cycled alone for the entire 40-kilometer bike course. A Duathlon world champion from 2007 and a known powerful cyclist, Fernandes built a two-minute lead on the chase group consisting of her compatriot Anais Moniz and Brit Abbie Thorrington. The lead was more than enough for one of the best runners in the sport. Fernandes had no problems maintaining and stretching her lead on the 10-kilometer run course. The real battle was for silver and bronze.

After cycling in the second chase group, Sapunova used her great running abilities to put herself in medal contention, running alongside Hungarian Zsofia Toth. As they neared the midway mark, Sapunova pulled ahead and secured the silver with the fastest run split of the day among the women, including Fernandes. But Collonge caught and passed Toth in the final few kilometers for the final spot on the podium.

As Fernandes’ career has ascended, she has come to dominate the European championships, racking up an astounding 8 European triathlon titles in all, including five elite championships, a pair of under23 crowns and one junior title.

Fernandes’ Portuguese teammate Joao Silva was later crowned the new under23 European triathlon champion. His compatriot Miguel Arraiolos finished in second place, meaning Portugal has reached a historical gold-silver success. Russian Olympian Dmitry Polyansky won the bronze medal.

After a quiet non-wetsuit swimming segment in Playa Mar Rabiosa at San Juan de los Terreros, which was led by the French junior world champion Aurelien Raphael, and few attacks on the bike where Raphael and the Italian Alberto Casadei tried to escape from the big group, the race was decided in the 10-kilometer run.

Casadei reached the second transition with 30 seconds over the big pack but his difference disappeared in the first of four laps. After the 2.5 kilometers, the Spaniard José Miguel Pérez decided to attack. Silva and Joao Pereira from Portugal and Polyansky tried to follow him. They ran together until the midway point when Arraiolos reached them and his teammate Silva, Arraiolos and Polyansky took the lead. Pérez could not follow them and join the fight for the medals.

In the last lap, Silva and Arraiolos broke away from Polyansky. Silva was pulled away from Arraiolos in the final stretch while Polyansky settled for the bronze medal. José Miguel Pérez was fourth and Massimo de Ponti of Italy was fifth.

La medallista de plata Olímpica Vanessa Fernandes compitió por primera vez tras los juegos Olímpicos de Beijing y demostró estar en forma dominando la carrera. Fernandes se hizo con el oro en los Campeonatos de Europa de Triatlón Sub 23 de Pulpi, España. Cruzó la meta con una ventaja de más de dos minutos sobre su rival más cercana, la Olímpica Yuliya Sapunova de Ucrania quien se llevó la medalla de plata. La francesa Jeanne Collonge se hizo con el bronce.

Fernandes dominó la carrera prácticamente de principio a fin. Después de salir del agua entre las líderes, en una natación sin neopreno a 24 grados, Fernandes mostró su destreza sobre la bicicleta, rompiendo la carrera en la primera de las seis vueltas y pedaleó en solitario durante el recorrido de la bicicleta. Fernandes, campeona del mundo de duatlón en 2007 y una gran ciclista consiguió una ventaja de dos minutos sobre el grupo perseguidor en el que estaban su compatriota Anais Moniz y la británica Abbie Thorrington. La ventaja fue más que suficiente para una de las mejores corredoras del triatlón. Fernandes no tuvo problemas en mantener y aumentar su ventaja en los 10 kilómetros del recorrido de carrera a pie. La lucha real estaba por la plata y el bronce.

Después de pedalear en el Segundo grupo perseguidor, Sapunova utilizó sus grandes habilidades en la carrera a pie para situarse en la lucha por las medallas, corriendo al lado de la húngara Zsofia Toth. Cuando se acercaron a la marca de mitad de recorrido, Sapunova pegó un tirón y se aseguró la plata con el segmento de carrera más rápido del día, incluyendo a Fernandes. Pero Collonge atrapó y pasó a Toth en los últimos kilómetros consiguiendo la última plaza del podium.

Fernandes es la clara dominadora de los Campeonatos de Europa con un total de 8 títulos europeos, incluyendo cinco campeonatos élite, un para de coronas Sub23 y un título junior.

El portugués Joao Fernandes, compañero de equipo de Fernandes, fue más tarde coronado como nuevo Campeón de Europa Sub23 de Triatlón. Su compatriota Miguel Arraiolos finalizó en segunda posición, lo que significa un hecho histórico para Portugal con el oro y la plata. El Olímpico Dmitry Polyansky de Rusia ganó la medalla de bronce.

Después de un tranquilo segmento de natación sin neopreno en la Playa Mar Rabiosa en San Juan de los Terreros, el cual lideró el campeón del mundo junior francés Aurelien Raphael y tras unos pocos ataques en el segmento de la bicicleta en donde Raphael y el italiano Alberto Casadei intentaron escapar del gran grupo, la carrera no se decidió hasta los 10 kilómetros de carrera a pie.

Cassadei alcanzó la segunda transición con 30 segundos de ventaja sobre el gran grupo, pero su diferencia desapareció en la primera de las cuatro vueltas. Después de 2.5 kilómetros, el español José Miguel Pérez decidió atacar. Silva y Joao Pereira de Portugal y Polyansky intentaron seguirle. Ellos corrieron juntos hasta el punto medio cuando Arraiolos les alcanzó y su compañero de equipo Silva, Arraiolos y Polyansky tomaron la cabeza. Pérez no pudo seguirles y luchar por las medallas.

En la última vuelta, Silva y Arraiolos se separaron de Polyansky. Silva se distanció de Arraiolos en la última parte mientras que Polyansky se tuvo que conformar con la medalla de bronce. José Miguel Pérez fue cuarto y Massimo de Ponti de Italia fue quinto.
