ITU Press Release -Nice ITU World Cup 2003 -Elite Men
Finish:
Frank Bignet acknowledged the local French crowd in the finish straight to score
a well deserved and very courageous win. Vladimir Polikarpenko (UKR) crossed
second, ahead of Brad Kahlefeldt (AUS) in third position.
Run Lap 2:
At the start of the final lap Bignet’s lead was only marginally reduced
to 1:32 over the chase group who had caught Goehler.
Run Lap 1:
Bignet held on gamely with a slightly reduced lead of 1:30 seconds over Goehler,
and a huge hunt group 40 seconds in arrears fighting for a bronze medal.
Bike to Run Transition:
By the end of the bike, Bignet had forged a 1:30 lead over Rene Goehler (GER),
who was another 35 seconds ahead of the huge chase pack. Cam Anderson (AUS)
and Brad Kahefeldt (AUS) followed into transition. Bignet went out aggressively
onto the first of three laps of the 10 k run.
Bike Lap 4:
Frank Bignet (FRA) forged a 40 second break
Bike Lap 3:
The second chase group started to close the gap down to 15 seconds.
Bike Lap 2:
The lead group worked efficiently to build a lead of around 30 seconds over
the chase group.
Bike Lap 1:
As they exited out of transition a group of around 15 got away from a large
chase group.
Swim Exit:
Paulo Miyashiro from Brazil lead a continuous group of swimmers to exit the
water into transition. Local French athletes Frederic Belaubre and Stephane
Poulat followed in second and third.
Swim Start:
A field of 76 Men entered the 24 degree Celsius water on the coast of triathlon
friendly Nice in perfect sunny conditions.
