Sjusjoen celebrated Winter Triathlon

También texto en español. Sjusjøen, this “Eldorado for skiing” once again saw athletes from around Europe head up into the hills.

The tracks were well laid out and slightly different from the World Championship course in order to maximise the quality of snow and in line with ITU policy the organisers tried to ensure each discipline took the same amount of time.

The original plan of 6k / 9k / 8k for the run / MTB / ski was changed after discussion with the athletes who felt that the snow conditions were good enough and fast enough to allow a 6k / 9k / 10k course, which would equal out the times for each section.

The run had a few tough climbs in it as did the bike but the ski course was a dream !

Pre-race favourites Arne Post and Alf Roger Holme knew that it was not going to be easy, especially with Heinz Planitzer and Siggi Bauer from Austria. Planitzer is known to have great speed on the run and with Bauer, coming back into form, both could push and create a commanding lead. The Czech athlete Pavel Jindra has also shown strength and so victory was by no means a forgone conclusion.

Amongst the women’s field was the fast-running Carina Wasle from Austria and Sigrid Mutscheller (who we knew as Siggi Lang). Of the two, Mutscheller was coming back into form but would she be strong enough to better the powerful running of Wasle. From Sweden we had Eva Nystrøm who was strong on the snow.

On race day the temperature was -13o C and started with sunshine. A small fall of snow during the night would make cycling that little bit more of a challenge and all athletes, Age Groupers as well as Elite, started together at exactly 11:00. The Norwegian TV crews were there to film with a promise that coverage would be broadcast that evening on the sports journals.

As the athletes set off, wrapped up against the cold, it was Jørgen Nørdskar who took the lead with Planitzer right on his heels. Of the three Nørdskar brothers who raced it was Jørgen who was the fastest and with Planitzer to work with they maintained a strong lead throughout the 6k of running to post a time of 19:46. Planitzer was a mere 4 seconds behind and they raced through T1 in around 30 seconds. Behind them was the group of four athletes who had also worked together and in that group was Post and Holme.

Amongst the women it was Wasle who ran strongest with 23:13. Mutscheller came in almost 20 seconds adrift but was quicker through transition.

Out onto the bike and Holme soon took the lead with Post not far behind. Planitzer and Bauer were working hard to keep contact but the conditions were just right for Post and Holme who came into T2 just seconds apart.

Mutscheller had wrenched the lead from Wasle and looked strong. The hills and powder snow were no problem for her and her cycling took her past several male elite competitors.

The TV crews caught a dramatic moment when Post set off on the ski – along with Holme he left T2, clicked his skis on and set off only to see his right ski come loose. He had to retrieve his ski and lost valuable seconds but soon rejoined Holme.

Planitzer had broken away from Bauer and despite a longer transition was able to keep his lead over his fellow countryman.

Post came home 1st to great support from the spectators and to the delight of the TV crews. Holme got a well-deserved 2nd place and Planitzer came home 3rd.

Mutscheller showed dominance on the bike and ski and took 1st with Wasle taking 2nd and Nytrøm in 3rd.

As the weather closed in and as the doping controls were made the top 8 male and female athletes were presented with their prize money, which totalled €6,000 and all gave their thanks to the hard work put in by Kåre Grøtta and his team.

Triatlón de Invierno de Sjusjoen

Sjusjoen, este “El dorado para esquiar ” vio como otra vez como los atletas de toda Europa se dirigieron hacia sus colinas.

Las pistas fueron bien trazadas y ligeramente diferentes de las del Campeonato del Mundo para maximizar la calidad de nieve y al igual que la política de la ITU los organizadores trataron de asegurar que cada disciplina tomase la misma cantidad de tiempo.

El plan original de 6k / 9k / 8k para la carrera / bici / esquí fue cambiado después de discutir con los atletas que opinaban que las condiciones de la nieve eran suficientemente buenas y rápidas para permitir una carrera de 6k / 9k / 10k, lo cual igualaría los tiempos de cada segmento.

¡La carrera tenía algunas subidas duras al igual que en la etapa en bici pero el esquí de fondo fue de ensueño!

Los favoritos Arne Post y Alf Roger Holme sabían que esto no iba a ser fácil, sobre todo con Heinz Planitzer y Siggi Bauer de Austria. Planitzer es conocido por tener una gran velocidad corriendo y con Bauer, volviendo a estar en forma, ambos podrían apretar y situarse en el liderato. El atleta checo Pavel Jindra también mostró su fuerza por lo que en ningún momento la victoria no estaba asegurada para ningúno.

Entre las mujeres estaban la rápida Carina Wasle de Austria y Siggi Mutscheller (quién era conocida como Siggi Lang). De los dos, Mutscheller volvía a ponerse en forma, pero sería lo bastante fuerte para superar a la poderosa Wasle. Desde Suecia vino Eva Nystrøm que fue fuerte en la nieve.
Durante el día de la carrera la temperatura fue de -13º C y empezó con el brillo del sol. Una leve nevada durante la noche supuso que la bici fuese un poquito más desafiante y todos los atletas, tanto AG como Elite, comenzaron juntos exactamente a las 11:00. Los equipos de TV noruegos estuvieron allí para rodar con la promesa de que la cobertura sería difundida esa tarde en las noticias deportivas.

A medida que los atletas salieron, envueltos por el frío, fue Jørgen Nørdskar quien tomó la delantera con Planitzer pisándole los talones. De los tres hermanos Nørdskar que corrieron Jørgen fue el más rápido y con Planitzer para trabajar con el mantuvieron una fuerte ventaja en los 6 k de carrera marcando un tiempo de 19:46. Planitzer estaba a tan solo 4 segundos por detrás y pasaron por la T1 en 30 segundos. Detrás de ellos fue el grupo de cuatro atletas que también había trabajado unido en el que se encontraban Post y Holme.

Entre las mujeres fue Wasle la que corrió con más fuerza, marcando 23 min. 13s. Mutscheller llegó casi 20 segundos por detrás, pero fue más rápida en la transición.

Ya en la bici Holme pronto tomó la delantera con Post no demasiado lejos. Planitzer y Bauer trabajaron mucho para mantener contacto pero las condiciones eran perfectas para Post y Holme que llegó a la T2 unos segundos antes.

Mutscheller había cedido el liderazgo a Wasle, a la que se veía más fuerte. Las colinas y la nieve en polvo no fueron ningún problema para ella y su pedaleo la hizo pasar a varios competidores masculinos de la elite.

Los equipos de TV captaron un momento dramático cuando Post tuvo que parar en el esquí de fondo – junto con Holme abandonó la T2, de puso sus esquís pero perdió su esquí derecho al estar flojo. Tuvo que recuperar su esquí y perdió preciados segundos, pero pronto volvió a estar junto a Holme.
Planitzer se había escapado de Bauer y a pesar de una transición más larga fue capaz de mantener su ventaja sobre su compatriota.

Post llegó en 1er lugar con un gran apoyo de los espectadores y para el deleite de los equipos de TV. Holme consiguió un bien merecido 2º lugar y Planitzer llegó 3º.

Mutscheller se mostró predominante sobre la bici y el esquí y llegó 1ª con Wasle 2ª y Nytrøm en 3ª posición.

A medida que el tiempo empeoraba y que los controles de dopaje fueron hechos los 8 mejores atletas masculinos y femeninos fueron presentados con su premio en metálico, que sumó 6,000 euros y todos dieron sus gracias al duro trabajop realizado por Kåre Grøtta y su equipo.Más…
