World Triathlon

This week the Spanish triathlon federation (Federación Española de Triatlón) have announced their nomination team to the Spanish Olympic Committee (Comité Olímpico Español).  At the conclusion of ITU’s Olympic qualifying period, Spain earned a total of four Olympic spots: two men and two women.  The federation has nominated Javier Gomez, Ivan Rana, Ana Burgos, and Ainhoa Murua.

Widely considered to be the gold medal favourite in Beijing, Gomez was a lock to make the Spanish team.  Since winning his first world cup in Madrid in June 2006, Gomez has quickly climbed the all-time wins list, already at number four with ten titles.  He has been making nearly weekly appearances on the podium.  In 2007 he won his first European title and followed that up with silver at the world championships in Hamburg, Germany.  Last month in Vancouver, Canada he ran away with his first world championship with a dominating performance on the run.

Joining him on the men’s team is friend and training mate Ivan Rana.  The 2002 world champion will be heading to his third Olympic Games, finishing fifth in Sydney and 23rd in Athens.  Rana is a proven performer on the big stage with three world championship medals and two elite European championship titles.

On the women’s team, the irrepressible Ana Burgos will be four months shy of her 41st birthday when she toes the start line in Beijing for her second Olympic appearance. Regardless of age, the former European champion is still the most dangerous woman on the Spanish team. Burgos finished seventh at the 2004 Athens Olympics.  This year Burgos hasn’t raced much but was victorious at the Chania ITU Triathlon European Cup in Greece in April.  Joining her in Beijing will be Ainhoa Murua who was nominated to her second Olympics after finishing 24th in Athens.  This year she was the top Spanish woman at the first three world cups in Mooloolaba, New Plymouth and Ishigaki.

Javier Gomez celebrates his first world championship earlier this month
Javier Gomez celebra su primer campeonato del mundo a principios de este mes

Esta semana la Federación Española de Triatlón ha anunciado el equipo seleccionado al Comité Olímpico Español. Al final del periodo de calificación Olímpica ITU, España ha ganado un total de cuatro plazas Olímpicas: dos masculinas y dos femeninas. La federación ha seleccionado a Javier Gómez, Ivan Rana, Ana Burgos y Ainoa Murua.

El principal favorito a la medalla de oro en Beijing, Gómez estaba claro que iba a estar en el equipo español. Desde su primera victoria en la copa del mundo en Madrid en Junio de 2006, Gómez ha ido subiendo en la lista de ganadores de todos los tiempos, y aparece ya en el número cuatro con diez títulos. Ha estado haciendo apariciones casi semanales sobre el podium. En 2007 ganó su primer título europeo y se hizo con la plata en los campeonatos del mundo de Hamburgo, Alemania. El pasado mes en Vancouver, se hizo con su primer campeonato del mundo dominando el segmento de carrera a pie.

Junto a él en el equipo masculino, está su amigo y compañero de equipo Ivan Rana. El campeón del mundo del 2002 participará en sus terceros Juegos Olímpicos, terminando quinto en Sydney y 23º en Atenas. Rana ha demostrado tener buenas actuaciones en los grandes momentos con tres medallas en los campeonatos del mundo y dos títulos élite en los Campeonatos Europeos.

En el equipo femenino, la incombustible Ana Burgos estará a cuatro meses de su 41 cumpleaños cuando ella pise la línea de salida en Beijing en su segunda aparición Olímpica. Independientemente de la edad, la antigua campeona de Europa es todavía la mujer más peligrosa en el equipo español. Burgos terminó séptima en las Olimpiadas de Atenas en 2004. Este año Burgos no ha corrido mucho pero fue ganadora en Abril de la Copa de Europa de Triatlón ITU de Chania, Grecia. Junto a ella en Beijing estará Ainoa Murua que ha sido seleccionada para sus segundas Olimpiadas tras finalizar 24º en Atenas. Este año ha sido la mejor mujer española en las tres copas del mundo en Mooloolaba, New Plymouth e Ishigaki.
