Spirig Powers way to London win

Switzerland’s Nicola Spirig powered her way to victory today at the London Dextro Energy Triathlon – ITU World Championship Series. After exiting the water behind the leaders, Spirig pulled herself into the front group on the bike and then tagging at the front of the run, bolted away in the last 200 metres from Sweden’s Lisa Norden to take her first Dextro Energy Triathlon – ITU World Championship Series win. Spirig’s finish time of 1 hour 54 minutes and 24 seconds was just two seconds ahead of Norden. Only three seconds back from these two was home country favourite and current world champion Helen Jenkins in third.

“It has been an absolutely amazing year for me, I don’t really know what to say, I am very very happy,” commented the 27-year old law student Spirig. “I knew that Lisa Norden is a very good sprinter, and I didn’t know about Helen [Jenkins] so I tried to break away early but they were just too strong so I just had to wait until the finish and see. I guess I was fast enough!”

A non-wetsuit swim greeted the 60 elite women as they entered the Serpentine in central Hyde Park, London. As per usual Australia’s Annabel Luxford led a group of 12 women out of the water, including Jenkins, Madrid winner Andrea Hewitt, Daniela Ryf and recent Tiszuajvaros world cup winner Kate McIlroy. A second group of 12 exited just about 20 seconds back with the likes of Spirig and Norden. 2008 Olympic silver medallist, Vanessa Fernandes from Portugal, showed her injury has still not fully healed exiting over 70 seconds back and eventually pulling out of the race.

As expected, biking powerhouse Spirig managed to single-handedly pull the chase group up to the leaders within the opening two laps on the flat and fast 40 kilometre bike course through Hyde Park as the leaders formed a large group of 24 at the front. The chase group worked hard and continued to catch the leaders over the next 20 kilometres, but with a crash on penultimate lap taking most of the group out only a few lucky athletes would finally catch on to the front pack on the last lap.

Onto the 10 kilometre run, local athlete Jodie Stimpson bolted out of transition into the lead followed by Spirig, Norden, Jenkins and Debbie Tanner from New Zealand. Eventual fourth place finisher Elizabeth May from Luxembourg eventually replaced the young Stimpson in this group. These five led the entire run, working off each other to increase their lead on the chasers. With three kilometres to go the first acceleration was put in by Jenkins causing Tanner to drop off. With 1,500 metres to go a second acceleration was put in by Jenkins dropping May. But Spirig and Norden would not be dropped and with only 200 metres left Spirig broke to the outside taking Norden with her, and not looking back she was able to head home the Swede by a couple of steps at the line.

“I am so pleased, especially in front of a home crowd,” said Jenkins. “To get on the podium is brilliant! I was a bit worried about my sprint, and then I saw Liz May drop off the pace, and I thought ‘I have to keep this up and just try and hang on to Lisa [Norden] and Nicola [Spirig]’, but they’re such good finishers and they’ve been up there all year, so I’m just pleased to be so close to them.”

Despite her absence, Australia’s Emma Moffat retained the lead of the Dextro Energy Triathlon – ITU World Championship Series. Norden moves into second place in the overall rankings with her silver medal today.

La suiza Nicola Spirig se ha hecho con la Victoria en la carrera de las Series del Campeonato del Mundo de Triatlón ITU Dextro Energy. Tras salir del agua por detrás de las líderes, Spirig alcanzó al grupo de cabeza en la bicicleta y marcó el ritmo en la carrera a pie, escapándose de la sueca Lisa Norden en los últimos 200 metros y de esta forma hacerse con su primera victoria en el Campeonato del Mundo de Triatlón ITU Dextro Energy. Spirig terminó con un tiempo de 1 hora 54 minutos y 24 segundos, tan solo dos segundos por delante de Norden.

“Ha sido un año totalmente increíble para mí, realmente no se que decir, estoy muy feliz,” comentó la estudiante de derecho de 27 años, Spirig. “Sabía que Lisa Norden tiene un gran sprint final y de Helen [Jenkins] no sabía que tal iba a responder al sprint, por lo que intenté escaparme pronto, pero estaban demasiado fuertes así que sólo tuve que esperar hasta el final y ver. ¡Creo que estuve bastante rápida!”

Sesenta nadadoras tomaron la salida en el segmento de la natación en el que no estuvo permitido el uso del neopreno en el Serpentine de Hyde Park. Como de costumbre Annabel lideró el grupo de cabeza formado por 12 mujeres a la salida del agua. En dicho grupo estaba Jenkins, la ganadora de Madrid Andrea Hewitt, Daniela Ryf y la reciente ganadora de la copa del mundo de Tiszaujvaros, Kate McIlroy. Un segundo grupo de 12 entre las que estaban Spirig y Norden salió del agua a 20 segundos. La portuguesa Vanessa Fernandes, medallista de plata en los Juegos Olímpicos de 2008, dio la sensación que no se encontraba totalmente recuperada saliendo del agua a 70 segundos y finalmente retirándose de la carrera.

Como era de esperar, la gran ciclista Spirig tiró sin la ayuda de nadie hasta llevar al grupo perseguidor al de cabeza en las primeras dos vueltas del llano y rápido recorrido de bicicleta de 40 kilómetros por Hyde Park, formando un gran grupo de 24 atletas. El grupo perseguidor trabajó duro y luchó por atrapar a los líderes en los siguientes 20 kilómetros, pero tras una caída en la penúltima vuelta la mayor parte del grupo se vio involucrado y sólo unos pocos afortunados atletas pudieron dar caza al grupo de cabeza en la última vuelta.

En los 10 kilómetros de carrera a pie, la atleta local Jodie Stimpson marcó el ritmo a la salida de la transición, seguida por Spirig, Norden, Jenkins y la neozelandesa Debbie Tanner. Finalmente la que a la postre sería cuarta clasificada, Elizabeth May, reemplazaría al frente del grupo a la joven Stimpson. Las cinco liderarían la carrera a pie y trabajarían mutuamente para incrementar la ventaja sobre los perseguidores. A tres kilómetros para la meta, el primer ataque de Jenkins hizo que Tanner se descolgase. A 1500 metros para la llegada un segundo ataque de Jenkins hizo que May se quedase. Per Spirig y Norden no se quedaron y a 200 metros para el final Spirig atacó llevándose con ella a Norden y no fue capaz de dejar a la sueca hasta un par de metros antes de la meta.

“Estoy muy contenta, especialmente delante de mi público,” dijo Jenkins. “¡Conseguir un pódium es genial! Estaba un poco preocupada con mi sprint y luego vi como Liz May se descolgaba y pensé ´tengo que mantener este ritmo e intentar que también se descuelgue Lisa [Norden] y Nicola [Spirig]’ pero ellas tienen un gran final y han estado arriba todo el año, por lo que estoy muy contenta de haber estado tan cerca de ellas.”

A pesar de su ausencia, la australiana Emma Moffatt mantiene el liderato de las series del Campeonato del Mundo de Triatlón ITU Dextro Energy. Norden pasa a la segunda posición en la clasificación general tras su medalla de plata de hoy.
