ITU’s top 10 moments from the 2018 triathlon season

Between February and November, the Triathlon and Multisport world was once again treated to non-stop action, with superb racing showcased across ITU World Triathlon Series, World Cup, Mixed Relay, Paratriathlon, Major Games and Mulitsport Festival events. The year was jam-packed with nail-biting finishes, inspirational courage, career milestone-makers and landmark global events. While it is hard to narrow all of the excitement down to just ten moments, we have hand-picked the Top ITU Moments of 2018 as those season snapshots that stood out the most and helped make this one of the best seasons yet!

Who doesn't love a nail-biting sprint finish? The WTS Bermuda women's race saw the most exciting finale of the season, with USA's Katie Zaferes and Great Britain's Vicky Holland so close down the blue carpet that it required a photo finish for second. Ultimately, it was Holland who was a nose ahead to win the silver.

The 2018 Triathlon season was HUGE for showcasing the sport on some of the world's biggest sports stages, with three Major Games events this year. The first was the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, where Flora Duffy (BER) and Henri Schoeman (RSA) won the individual events and Paratriathlon and Mixed Relay events were also held.

The future stars of the sport were on display during the 2018 Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games, where Dylan Mccullough (NZL) and Amber Schlebusch (RSA) were crowned champions!

Indonesia hosted the 2018 Palembang Asian Games, and it was Japanese athletes who dominated the event, Jumpei Furuya and Yuko Takahashi winning the individual titles and forming part of the gold-medal Mixed Relay squad.

The inaugural WTS Bermuda race was historical for several reasons, but one of the great moments saw Norway become the first country ever to manage a clean-sweep of a men's WTS podium. Casper Stornes produced a killer breakaway performance to win his first WTS gold, before compatriots Kristian Blummenfelt and Gustav Iden joined in with the silver and bronze.

After its successful debut in 2017, the ITU Multisport World Championships Festival moved to Fyn, Denmark, this year. A full week's worth of first-class competition makes it a Top 10 ITU Moment of 2018, complete with its unique underground transition!

Whether you were at April's WTS Bermuda in person or watching on TriathlonLive.tv, you will know just how loud the crowd and electric the atmosphere was for the race. It's didn't hurt that hometown hero Flora Duffy absolutely CRUSHED the women's event, essentially racing solo for the majority of the Olympic-distance course. We can still hear the crowd's cheers as she took the finish tape!

The ITU World Cup circuit always offers plenty of opportunities to see our talented triathletes shine and 2018 was no different. This year, no fewer than 13 different athletes from around the globe topped the podium for the first time - what a feeling!

Australian PTWC Paratriathlete Lauren Parker's inspirational displays have made her story a Top 10 ITU Moment this year. In 2017, a bike accident resulted in Parker being paralysed from the waist-down. Less than a year later she started competing in Paratriathlons and won bronze at both the 2018 Commonwealth Games and World Championships.

The anticipation continues to build for the Olympic debut of the Team Mixed Relay event at Tokyo 2020. This year saw the inaugural ITU Mixed Relay Series kick-start the qualification process with races in Nottingham, Hamburg and Edmonton, and a thrilling first season saw Team France crowned the 2018 World Champions.

Seeing Vicky Holland's delighted dance atop the World Championship podium was undoubtedly one of the Top 10 ITU Moments of 2018. The Brit had a SPECTACULAR 2018 WTS season, collecting wins in Leeds, Edmonton and Montreal before finishing second on the Gold Coast cemented her World Championship-winning dream for the first time.

Mario Mola has been in unstoppable form over the past few years and 2018 was no different. The Spaniard won four WTS races over the season before silver in the Gold Coast Grand Final earned Mola a third straight World Championship title, only the second man in WTS history to achieve the feat.
