Two-day ITU Technical Official Education Seminar in Madrid

The ITU Technical Education Programme continues this weekend (24-25 October) in Madrid, Spain. Almost fifty attendees from seven European countries – Spain, Portugal, Israel, Italy, Israel, Great Britain, Hungary – are ready to expand their learning about the venue and the technical operations in triathlon. After London and Gothenburg the capital city of Spain will be the third segment of the ITU Technical Official Education Programme in Europe this year. The two-day seminar begins on Saturday morning and isorganised by the Spanish Triathlon Federation (FETRI) and the ITU Events Department.

Thanos Nikopoulos, ITU events operations manager, Enrique Quesada, ITU sport results manager and Jorge Garcia the head of Technical Delegates and the Technical Officials in Spain will be leading the lectures at the High Performance and Physical Education University (INEF).

The Spanish Triathlon Federation delegates more than thirty technical officials to the seminar from all over the country. “The Spanish Triathlon Federation has a long tradition in the organization of triathlon and multisport events. This year we hosted World Championship Series event in Madrid, Premium European Cup in Pontevedra, European YOG qualifier & European Cup in Mar Menor and Iberoamerican Championships in Ferrol. In the upcoming years we will have further events at the highest organizational level like 2010 Vitoria ETU LD Triathlon European Championships, 2011 Gijon ITU Duathlon World Championships, 2011 Pontevedra ETU Triathlon European Championships and 2012 Vitoria ITU LD Triathlon World Championship With this seminar the FETRI would like to increase the level of knowledge of the Spanish technical officials. The attending officials have been selected according the technical educational programme of the Federation. All organizers, representatives of the LOCs of the future ITU events will take part in the seminar. The course will be a huge benefit and a long-period investment for all of us.” – said Jorge Garcia.

About ITU Technical Official Education Programme and Certification System

The goal of the ITU Technical Officials Education and Certification System is to improve the level of triathlon officiating all over the world by:

  • creating a basic level of officiating skills, where national federation officiating programmes do not exist or is at a very basic (grass roots) level;
  • improving the level of officiating skills where the system is already in place.


The operation of the ITU Technical Officials Education and Certification System is coordinated by the ITU Events Department. It features standard learning materials and specifically trained lecturers for the following three levels of courses:

1. National Technical Official (NTO) Level I
2. Continental Technical Official (CTO) Level II
3. International Technical Official (ITO) Level III
