Vansteelant Memorial Duathlon

Last year the triathlon and MultiSport world mourned the shocking and sudden death of duathlon legend Benny Vansteelant.  To honour his life and career, the Torhout ITU Duathlon World Series Event will also be the Benny Vansteelant Memorial Duathlon taking place near his hometown in Belgium on June 1.  The extended distance of the event features a 10-kilometer run, 30-kilometer bike, 5-kilometer run, 30-kilometer bike, 5-kilometer run.  Elite, junior and age-group categories will be contested with a $10,000 USD prize purse for the elites.

Vansteelant tragically passed away on September 14, 2007 after being struck by a car while training near his home.  He remains as one of ITU’s most decorated athletes with four duathlon world championships, four long distance duathlon world championships and one junior world title.  His younger brother Joerie won last year’s long distance duathlon world championship and shortly after was appointed to the ITU Duathlon Committee.
