Workout Wednesday with Dunia Gomez

Workout Wednesday has been a longstanding tradition at the International Triathlon Union, where we like to honour and showcase some of the best triathletes in the world - you!

We’ve talked to medallists from the 2016 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final Cozumel age group races in both the standard and sprint distance sport classes and have asked them to provide their triathlete story along with their favourite workouts, proving that no matter your age, gender, race or country, anyone can tri!

This week we have Dunia Gomez, a triathlon coach from Mexico who traded in her dancing shoes for triathlon gold medals. Switching to a triathlon suit was the start of a fantastic age-group career for Gomez as she became a three-time gold medallist at the 2016 World Championships in Cozumel, winning the standard distance, sprint distance and aquathlon races in the same week. She was also the 2015 world champ for aquathlon and the sprint distance for her age group. So if you are going to get any training tips from anyone, Gomez is it!

Name: Dunia Gomez Tirado
Country: MEX
Age Group: Female 30-34 Standard Distance
Profession: Triathlon Coach

How you got involved in triathlon?
I was a folkloric dancer and the teacher sent us to run and swim to do some conditioning. So I started swimming and while there I knew a triathlon group who then invited me to train with them. After starting with the group and doing some swimming and running, I then went to a relay triathlon in Ixtapa where I did the swimming part. It was after that race when I knew that I wanted to do triathlon forever, so I left dance and become a triathlete.

How often you train?
Every single day.

Best training advice?
Alway find a real personal meaning when it comes to training and then do it with your whole heart.
  What motivates you to race?
My Family.
