Olympic Qualifying

The greatest prize in sports awaits two triathletes in Beijing this summer.  Olympic gold will be up for grabs for the third time in triathlon’s history on August 18 and 19 on a challenging Olympic course.  But the world’s finest triathletes must first qualify to get there.

Sydney Men's PodiumThe Olympic fields are capped at 55 men and 55 women and only eight countries can bring the maximum of three men and three women.  That translates into ferociously competitive qualifying standards.  ITU’s Olympic qualification period spans 24 months beginning June 1, 2006 and ending May 31, 2008 (plus the Vancouver BG Triathlon World Championships).  In that timeframe, athletes earn ITU Olympic qualifying points based on their best results from the BG Triathlon World Championships, the BG Triathlon World Cup series, ITU Continental Championships and ITU Continental Cups.
Athletes can use their top 16 results (seven from the first half and nine from the second half).

The ITU Olympic rankings are used to determine how many athletes each National Olympic Committee (NOC) can send to the Olympic Games.  It also serves to decide which eight NOCs may have the maximum of three men and three women.  Olympic spots are also awarded to the NOC of the winner of each of the five Continental Olympic qualifying events, such as the ETU European Championships and OCA Oceania Championships.  In addition, Olympic spots are reserved to the NOC of the top three finishers from the 2008 Vancouver BG Triathlon World Championships.

Individual athletes earn Olympic nominations through their own National Federation’s designated set of qualifying standards.  Most federations have Olympic selection races while others are discretionary and left up to a selection committee.  Several other federations are an elaborate combination of both.
