En la temporada 2012 se dieron algunas de las carreras más prolíficas en la historia de la ITU, que se convirtieron en el marco ideal para fotos espectaculares. Los fotógrafos de la ITU capturaron sus imágenes en ocho paisajes diferentes, de cuatro continentes y ocho países.

Aunque la elección fue sumamente difícil, la gente emitió su parecer y nosotros escuchamos. La foto más popular del año pertenece a la imagen de
Charlotte McShane (AUS) en el último evento de la Serie del año, tomada por Janos Schmidt. Su postura, su mirada concentrada, obtuvo un 27.57% de los votos.

La segunda foto más votada también pertenece a Janos, y es la de Fabienne St. Louis (MRI), que se quedó con el 15.24% de los votos. En contrate con la de McShane en el fragor de la carrera, la imagen de St. Louis nos muestra la calma anterior a las tormentas. Su postura pacífica, su mentón apenas elevado producen una sensación de serenidad y optimismo en un escenario de nerviosismo y agitación.
