Classification Opportunities 2021

As announced at Congress in November 2020, for 2021, World Triathlon would prioritize classification opportunities for physical impairments (PI) at continental championships being this year the year of the Paralympic Games, providing opportunities for new athletes.

For Visual Impairment (VI), finding enough opportunities to ensure the athletes on the pathway to Tokyo 2020 was also the priority as the Covid-19 pandemic has systematically caused cancellation of VI classification at events and shared opportunities that were programmed to happen in different locations world-wide. This has forced International Federations to cooperate and share resources to offer para athletes joint opportunities as otherwise, participation at the Paralympic Games could be jeopardized. Classification is extremely important for athletes as it is part of the eligibility criteria to participate at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games.

2021 Africa Triathlon Championships Sharm El Sheikh  (Physical Impairments)
World Triathlon is finalizing details to hopefully offer PI classification on Friday 11th June as long as logistics allow for it with current travelling/quarantine restrictions. More details will follow in the next few days

Madrid 17-18 June (VI Classification)
World Triathlon together with the Spanish Paralympic Committee, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and the International Blind Sports Association (IBSA) have managed to put together a classification opportunity in Madrid on 17 and 18th of June, linking it to the 2021 World Triathlon Para Cup A Coruna. Madrid has been chosen since the Spanish Paralympic Committee has a cooperation agreement with the clinic that will be used and athletes competing in A Coruña will still be able to arrive in time for the event-related activities. Two classification panels will be available.

2021 World Triathlon Para Cup A Coruna (Physical Impairments)
World Triathlon will be conducting PI classification on Friday 18th June prior to the A Coruña Para Cup as there is a significant number of athletes to be classified on the start list.

2021 Americas Triathlon Para Championships Pleasant Prairie (Physical Impairments)
World Triathlon will be conducting PI classification on Friday 25th June prior to the PATCO Continental Championships as there is a significant number of athletes to be classified on the start list.

Opportunities in the fall:
World Triathlon is currently identifying the best choices to offer additional opportunities for classification after the Paralympic Games in Tokyo and these will be announced in the next weeks.
