Hindman oro en el Mundial Juvenil

Hindman golden in Men's Junior World Champs

El estadounidense Austin Hindman ganó el Campeonato Mundial Juvenil de Triatlón ITU 2016 en Cozumel superando al canadiense Charles Paquet que se quedó con la plata. El británico Ben Dijkstra fue medalla de bronce.

“No tengo plabras,” dijo Hindman. “Me sentía con fuerzas antes de empezar la carrera. Poder ganar es maravilloso, es un sueño hecho realidad. No lo puedo creer.”

Los juveniles largaron con una etapa de 750 metros en las cálidas aguas del océano. El trayecto corto no propició diferencias considerables entre los nadadores; solo un minuto separaba al primero del último (número 75) con los que los jóvenes salieron del agua en una larga hilera.

El noruego Endre Espedal intentó separarse del grupo de 37 líderes siendo cinco segundos más veloz en la transición. Sin embargo, con el Campeón Olímpico Juvenil en la persecución, el ataque de Espedal fue infructuoso, aunque pudieron deshacerse de cinco hombres.

Parecía que Daniel Hoy (NZL) y Dijkstra repetirían la historia de Nanjing, donde en los Juegos olímpicos Juveniles 2014 esprintaron hacia la meta para definir por foto.

“Pensé en presionar y ver quién me seguía,” dijo Dijkstra. “Me gusta ir fuerte, me gusta correr así. Unos pocos me ayudaron a presionar y me sentí bien porque si podía marcar un ritmo arduo, favorecería a los más sólidos.”

De todos modos, el canadiense Paquet fue el que enfrentó la primera vuelta pedestre con una ventaja de siete segundos. Lo seguían Dijkstra, Hindman y Hoy. Todo estaba dándose a favor de Paquet, pero Hindman hizo una jugada maestra y logró superar a Paquet para ganar el oro.

“Fue difícil, perdí 2k corriendo, estaba cansado,” dijo Paquet. “Hizo mucho calor, tomé mucha agua. Traté de mantener la marcha, porque sabía que se me venía Austin. Estoy satisfecho y sé que Austin fue más veloz hoy..”

Paquet fue plata y Dijkstra, bronce.
