World Triathlon

In an effort to assist with the global development of triathlon Libby Burrell (Director, ITU Sport Development) and Ned Wills (BG Group) paid a visit to Tunisia in North Africa from 25 27 February to meet with a group from Tunisia who are in the process of getting a national federation off the ground.

Meetings were held with the Director of Sports for the Ministry of Sports and Youth; the Secretary General of the Tunisian Olympic Committee; BG Tunisia leadership; Dean of ISEPS (Sports University) and a group of athletes and coaches from the Sfax Tri Club in the region.

The highlight of the trip was a visit to a swim workout where the group of athletes were put through their paces by the local triathlon coaches.

The stage has been set for Tunisia to make an impact in the sport in Africa and beyond and ITU, along with their global partner BG Group, will provide support in the development process.

Libby Burrell said she was thoroughly impressed with the preparation the group in Tunis had done to ensure a solid base for the sport and also raise the awareness of the sport of triathlon with all the important role players in the sporting bodies within the country.

This trip has been a highlight for me in so far as my career in triathlon is concerned. The enthusiastic group of committee members have made things happen and have not waited around for other people to do things for them. ITU can now step up to the plate and provide the technical knowledge the coaches and athletes need and we plan to do this with a series of coaching courses and athlete camps planned in the very near future.

En un esfuerzo por asistir por parte de desarrollo del deporte de triatln Libby Burrell (Directora de Desarrollo del Deporte ITU) y Ned Wills (BG Group) se pag una visita a Tnez en el Norte de frica del 25 al 27 de Febrero para encontrarse con un grupo de personas de Tnez que estn dando vida a una federacin nacional.

Se realizaron encuentros con el Director de Deportes del Ministerio de Deportes y Juventud, el Secretario General del Comit Olmpico de Tnez; el responsable para Tnez de BG Group; el Decano de la ISEPS (Universidad Deportiva) y un grupo de atletas y entrenadores de Sfax, un club de triatln de la regin.

El punto fuerte del viaje fue la visita a una piscina en la que el grupo de atletas reciba entrenamiento por parte de los entrenadores locales de triatln.

La estancia se ha realizado en Tnez como punto de impacto del deporte en frica y ms all y la ITU, con su patrocinador mundial BG Group, proporcionar apoyo en el proceso de desarrollo.

Libby Burrell dijo que estaba muy impresionada por los preparativos que el grupo de Tnez haba realizado para asegurar una slida base para el desarrollo del triatln as como el nivel de compromiso de los ms importantes miembros de los cuerpos deportivos locales de todo el pas.

Este viaje ha sido impresionante para mi en lo que significa para mi carrera en el triatln. El entusiasta grupo de miembros del comit ha hecho que todo ocurra sin esperar que otros vengan a hacerlas por ellos. La ITU puede ahora saltar al plat y proveerles los conocimientos tcnicos que los atletas y los entrenadores necesitan lo cual pensamos hacer con campamentos para atletas y cursos para entrenadores en un futuro prximo.
