Hong Kong Asian Cup this weekend

Several Olympians are heading to the Hong Kong Disneyland resort this weekend but it’s not to see Mickey or visit the magic kingdom.  They’ll racing for a $25,000 USD prize purse at the OSIM Hong Kong ITU Triathlon Asian Cup, one of the final events in ITU’s 2008 season.

The women’s field will feature four Olympians from Beijing including Japanese veteran Kiyomi Niwata, one of just three women to have raced in all three Olympic Games.  Niwata finished ninth in Beijing and was runner-up at this year’s Asian championships.  Also in the field will be Yuliya Sapunova of the Ukraine and Vendula Frintova of the Czech Republic.  Sapunova was 24th in Beijing and is coming off a silver medal at a recent Premium European Cup in Turkey last month.  Frintova has done well in Hong Kong in the past, taking bronze last year.  She won in Poland in September and recently finished seventh at the BG Triathlon World Cup series finale in Mexico a few weeks ago.  Rounding out the group of Olympians is Hong Kong’s Tania Mak So Ning, who will look to use the crowd support in her favour.  In 2006 she took bronze on her home course.  Click here for women’s start list

In the men’s field, last year’s winner Daniil Sapunov of Kazakhstan looks to defend his title.  This year he has racked up three Continental Cup titles and was runner-up at the Asian championships.  In Beijing, Sapunov finished in 21st place.  He will face a group of Americans including Joe Umphenour, this year’s U.S. National Championships runner-up and Brian Fleischmann.  Also in the field will be Israeli twins Dan and Ran Alterman and Hong Kong’s double Olympian Daniel Lee Chi Wo.  He was a silver medallist in 2006 and will keen to improve on last year’s ninth place finish.  Click here for men’s start list
