World Triathlon

Now that the dust has settled on the 2023 edition of the World Triathlon Multisport Championships and the athletes have all set sail from beautiful Ibiza, it is time to reflect on another outstanding event for the Age Group community, where new World Champions were crowned and Legends written across Duathlon (sprint and standard), Aquathlon, Cross Duathlon and Triathlon, Long Distance Triathlon and Long Distance Aquabike formats.

In terms of the overall medal standings, 24 nations came away with at least one world title in their ranks, Great Britain (61), Spain (21) and the USA (21) topping the list of champions across all events. Mexico (5) had the sixth highest number of silver medals behind those three nations, France (17) and Italy (7), Germany with 10 bronze among their 20 overall medals that also included 6 world champions.

A special mention goes to David Bernard of France who became the first of 11 athletes to win two world titles (Sprint and Standard Duathlon), a list that also included GB’s Kevin Howard Bexley (Duathlon and Long Distance Triathlon), USA’s Steph Popelar (Sprint and Standard Duathlon) Portugal’s Catarina Felício Santos (Sprint Duathlon and Aquathlon) and Spaniard Teresa Pons Munill (Cross Triathlon and Cross Triathlon).

There were 15 age groupers who competed in five events across the week, earning themselves the title of Multisport Legend. Congratulations to all of the Ibiza 2023 Multisport Legends on their achievement: May-Li Cuypers (USA), Eusebio Noguera Pujol (ESP), Carlos Andres Ramirez Duarte (ESP), Joaquim Rathbauer (AUT), Khaled El Shobokshy (EGY), Juan Carlos Martinez Guiot (ESP), Takahiro Mishina (JPN), Irion Serafim De Souza Filho (BRA), Gherardo Mercati (ITA), Javier López García (ESP), Laura Ravelli (ITA), Jeff Shmoorkoff  (CAN), Patrick Johnson (NZL), Jerym Brunton (NZL) and Luis Aparecio Ruela Da Silva Assuncao (BRA).

“I’m very happy to get this achievement and to finish five competitions, thanks to the whole triathlon family, the Egypt Triathlon Federation and General Ahmed Nasser,” said Khaled el Shobokshy. “I am the first African, Arab and Egyptian athlete to complete five races at a Multisport World Championships and become a World Triathlon legend. It was very difficult, the cross country was a totally different challenge for me, so I am very proud and happy to have finished!”
