ITU Congress Highlights

The 22nd ITU Congress was held last Thursday in the Gold Coast prior to the highly successful 21st ITU Triathlon World Championships. Ninety delegates from 47 countries and all five continental confederations travelled to Australia for the annual meeting of ITU, the first one to be convened by ITU President Marisol Casado.

Some of the highlights of the Congress were:

1. Awarding of Multisport World Championships.  The following World Championships were awarded:
2011 Long Distance World Championships to Las Vagas, USA
2011 Duathlon World Championships to Gijon, Spain
2012 Long Distance World Championships to Vitoria , Spain

2. Elections: The following were elected:
Medical Committee: Dr. Lanre Glover, Nigeria
Multisport Committee: Jeff Dyrek (USA), Kent Horner (South Africa), M. Mobini (Iran), Ricardo Probert (Mexico)
Audit Committee: Rob Kasper (USA), Kim Jin Yong (Korea), Gerardo Zetina (Mexico)

3. Honorary Persons:  The following were elected unanimously as Honorary members of ITU:
• Anne-Marie Gschwend, Switzerland
• Dottie Dorion, USA

4. Michel Gignoux Award: Michael Machacka (Switzerland) was awarded posthumously the ITU Michel Gignoux award for his outstanding contribution to the technical operations of ITU Events.  Michael passed away in June of this year and is sadly missed by all his ITU friends.
