ITU President Marisol Casado presented at the Women and Sport Conference in Madrid Wednesday. In her speech, Casado stressed the importance of women assuming leadership roles within major sporting federations.

In her address, Casado remarked, “It is important that women serve high-responsibility roles in sport. Triathlon has always been a sport that has true gender equality. There are the same prizes, same distances and same courses. In 1989, this concept was a shock for some people. Today, one of the main goals for triathlon is to have the same number of men and women participating in events.

She added, “In history, women have always entered sports several years after men. Women are trying to fill in that gap now. However in my career in the sport of triathlon, I have been receiving warm support from men to achieve this position and develop the sports, and it has been always important for me.”
