The ITU Level 1 TO course took place in Bangkok to enhance the development of technical officials in South East Asian countries ahead of the 2014 Asian Beach Games.

A total of 19 participants with diverse professional backgrounds such as professors, soldiers, triathletes, event organizers and coaches from Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines took part in a two-day course to share their knowledge and experience with course facilitators, Qin Jianqiu from China and Melody Tan from Malaysia.

“This course is very helpful for our federation before the Asian Beach Games next year. We carefully selected our candidates who will officiate at the Triathlon and Duathlon events in the Asian Beach Games. Throughout this course, our participants learned the updated ITU competition rules, duties and responsibilities of all TO assignments at ITU events and also gained valuable experiences from facilitators who were involved with major events such as Olympic Games and Asian Games,” said Vijitr Sitinawin, President of Thailand Triathlon Association.

“We are happy to share our knowledge and experiences with the participants. We showed many videos and gave group tasks to encourage their participation in our sessions. We divided the participants into teams and evaluated their group work, giving scores to each team depending on the quality of their group activities. We believe that our efforts make our sessions more interactive and cooperative. We would like to thank the Triathlon Association of Thailand for arranging good facilities for us to facilitate without any problems,” agreed facilitators Jianqiu and Tan.

“The Triathlon Association of Thailand will play an important role in our sport development in South East Asia. Thailand is geographically located in the center of South East Asia and their stable economy will encourage them to host more major Games in the future. To be parallel with this country’s sports development, Triathlon Association of Thailand has been investing in athletes and coaches development. I am certain that this course added another milestone for the development of triathlon in Thailand,” said Ki, Wookyong, ASTC Sports Development Coordinator.

The next upcoming sport development project in Asia will be the ITU Level 2 Coaches Seminar from November 25th to 29th 2013 in Hong Kong.
