Messias da a Brasil la primera medalla de oro del Mundial Juvenil

Debido a una fuerte tormenta, la carrera del Campeonato Mundial Juvenil masculino ITU 2015 debió ser retrasada y finalmente cambiada al formato duatlón. El brasileño Manoel Messias aprovechó la oportunidad para quedarse con su primer título mundial. Esta es la primera vez en que Brasil está representado en la cima del podio de una competencia de Campeonato Mundial Juvenil.

En la recta final, Messias se trenzó en feroz duelo con el alemán Peer Sonksen y el francés Leo Bergere, que se quedaron con el segundo y tercer puesto respectivamente. Cuando se cambió el trayecto de triatlón sprint por el de duatlón de 5km pedestres, cuatro vueltas de ciclismo (20km) y una vuelta pedestre de 2,5km, más de 65 hombres se lanzaron tras el título mundial frente a la Fuente Buckingham.

Las calles anchas, llanas fueron ideales para que un gran número de atletas se agrupara en la primera disciplina de la carrera. Más de 20 hombres, con el español Roberto Sanchez Mantecon a la cabeza, entraron en la primera transición con una diferencia de cinco segundos entre cada uno. Entre ellos también veíamos al ganador Messias, y a Peer Sonksen y Leo Bergere, eventuales segundo y tercero.

Sanchez logró abrir una brecha al salir de la transición. Junto a Bergere, Gustav Iden (NOR), Tayler Reid (NZL) y Max Studer (SUI), el pelotón líder quedó reducido a 14 hombres.

Reid intentó pasar al frente en varias ocasiones aunque nunca con éxito. Al finalizar las cuatro vueltas en bicicleta, el atleta juvenil enfrentó el trayecto por Columbus Street, donde el título se definiría finalmente.

La vuelta fue decisiva porque muchos de los corredores aminoraron la marcha. Al rodear la Fuente por última vez, todo hacía suponer que Sonksen sería el más veloz, pero Messias pudo subir un cambio en los metros finales y pasar al alemán justo a tiempo para adjudicarse los honores frente a los vítores de los presentes. Sonksen y Bergere completaron el podio, primera vez también para ambos.
