The official programme for the first World Conference of Science in Triathlon shows that every step from training to recovery will be discussed when scientists and coaches come to Spain later this month.

Some of the best minds in sports science and triathlon are expected to descend on the University of Alicante for the ITU’s inaugural scientific summit from March 24 to 26, spending three days discussing just how triathlon and science mix.

The nine respected keynote speakers will each cover the topics that are often discussed when it comes to triathlon. Dr Gregoire P. Millet, from the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, will start with an address titled “Physiological requirements for different levels of triathlon”, followed by the UCI’s doctor and scientific advisor, Dr Mario Zorzoli, who will present “biology passport parameters”.

Dr Roberto Cejeula from the University of Alicante will present “Quantification of training in triathlon”, before German National Olympic Committee chef de mission Rolf Ebeling compares Olympic distance with sprint distance races. Dr Jan Olbrecht, who lectures at universities in Germany and Belgium, will cover off on the swim leg, legendary U.S. coach Bobby McGee the run leg while New Zealand sports scientist Dr Paul Laursen will talk about training for long distance triathlons. Dr Randall L. Wilber, who is a senior sports physiologist for the United States Olympic Committee, will lead the discussion on altitude training and Dr Inigo Mujika, from the University of the Basque country, takes the keynote conference on tapering.

In addition to the keynote speakers, more than 50 different submissions will also become part of the conversation as they are presented through oral and poster presentations.

Those topics range from ankle prosthetics for lower-leg paratriathletes during the swim/ride transition, the wetsuit effect on ITU World Cup swim performances, to body composition in elite triathletes and an analysis of injuries produced in Olympic triathlon.
