The 2022 review: Multisport World Championships in numbers

The Multisport World Championships made triumphant returns in 2022, split across three locations throughout the year, with titles available at Elite, U23, Junior and Para levels as well as bringing together the world’s Age Group athletes once more.

It began in the snow back in February, Andorra’s Naturlandia Resort hosting the World Triathlon Winter Championships that featured new, spectator-friendly race configurations of all three segments (run, mountain bike, ski) being raced twice, as well as having the first Winter Duathlon titles up for grabs alongside the Triathlon and 2x2 Mixed Team Relays.

Then in June it was over to the first leg of World Triathlon Multisport Championships in Targu Mures, Romania, the athletes competing for the Duathlon individual and 2x2 Mixed Team Relay, Cross Triathlon and first ever Cross Duathlon world titles. It was followed by the Long Distance Triathlon, Aquathlon and Long Distance Aquabike World Championships at the purpose-built x-bionic sphere in Samorin, Slovakia.

Italians shine in 2022

Italy proved themselves the masters of multisport in 2022, winning no fewer than 15 medals of all colours with a squad of just 17 athletes across the winter and summer elite races. France won 12 medals but from the largest pool of athletes (28), including brilliant sweeps of the men’s Cross Triathlon and Duathlon podiums in Targu Mures spearheaded by champions Arthur Serrieres and Krilan le Bihan.

The first ever 2X2 Duathlon Mixed Relay World Champions were also crowned in Romania, with Belgium’s Arnaud Dely and Maurine Ricour the toast of the final day of the action in Targu Mures, as they powered their way to the title on a hot afternoon in the city centre.

Two excellent elite races in Samorin saw the World Triathlon Long Distance titles go to Lucy Charles-Barclay (GBR) and Pierre le Corre (FRA), while Italians proved they also had the golden touch in 2022 with Franco Pesavento crowned the men’s Winter World Champion and the great Eleonora Peroncini closing out her career by winning the first ever Cross Duathlon world title.
