World Triathlon

Its not often an athlete wins a world championship before a world cup but thats exactly what German Daniel Unger has done.  After a stunning performance in Hamburg last year to be crowned world champion, Unger won his first world cup today in another thrilling finish in Richards Bay.  He becomes just the third German man to win a world cup and the first since Maik Petzold won in Salford in 2004, out-sprinting American Matt Reed and South African Hendrik DeVilliers down the final stretch.

My first victory on the world cup circuit its amazing,” said Unger at the finish line.  “I just wanted to test myself here.  Im focused on one day in August, the Olympic Games.”

Powerful swimmer Marko Albert of Estonia led the men out of the water and into T1.  Just behind him were Swiss Sebastien Gacond and Volodymyr Polikarpenko of the Ukraine, last years silver medalist.  Other notables were Matt Reed of the U.S. who was 12 seconds back of Albert and defending champion Hendrik DeVilliers of South Africa who was a further four seconds behind Reed. 

Quickly on the 40-kilometer bike course the men came together to form a large lead group of 37 riders.  Just past the midway mark of the bike, American Brian Fleischmann pulled away on a solo break and held a 24-second lead after the fifth of eight laps.  In the late stages of the bike, Fleischmann was joined by Reed and the two Americans rode into T2 together and headed out on the 10-kilometer run course together.

I had a lot of confidence today and I really pushed the bike,” said Reed.  “It was s good day to have a great run after a tough bike like that.

Just after the first lap of the run, Reed started to pull away from Fleischmann but a group of seven men kept within striking distance.  His pursuers included 2007 world champion Daniel Unger, Brazilian Reinaldo Colucci and DeVilliers, who was looking to duplicate last years breakthrough win.  Halfway through the run Reed continued to lead but the chase pack shaved six seconds off the lead.

Reed took the bell lap with an 8-second lead but at the far turnaround he was caught by DeVilliers and Unger.  In the final kilometer the South African took the lead but Unger and Reed stayed close.  Up the final hill Unger pushed the pace and made a mad dash for the finish line to claim his first world cup title.  Reed holds on for silver, just ahead of DeVilliers in an exciting finish. 

It was my main goal just to run with these guys to the hill and then push as hard as I can to the finish,” added Unger.  “This is the best time of my life right now

Its awesome to have the home crowd out,” replied bronze medalist DeVilliers.  “We had a race in the township on Thursday with 464 athletes, all with new bikes and new helmets.  It was great.

Canadian Kyle Jones finished in fourth place and Laurent Vidal of France in fifth, career bests for both.

After coming into Richards Bay unranked (due to not racing) Unger leaps to number ten in the world, tied with Simon Whitfield.  DeVilliers jumps from 44 to 14, tied with Reed who also came into the race unranked.  Jones cracks the top ten with his best world cup performance to date.  Click here for updated world rankings

No sucede a menudo que un atleta gane un campeonato del mundo antes de una copa del mundo, pero eso exactamente los que Daniel Unger ha hecho. Tras una gran actuacin en Hamburgo el ao pasado para ser coronado campen del mundo, Unger ha ganado hoy su primera copa del mundo en otro emocionante final en Richards Bay. l se convierte en el tercer hombre alemn en ganar una copa del mundo, y el primero desde que Maik Petzold ganase en Salford en 2004,  tras ganar al sprint al americano Matt Reed y el sudafricano Hendrik De Villiers en un disputado final.
Mi primera victoria en el circuito de la copa del mundo es increble, dijo Unger en la lnea de meta. Slo quise probarme aqu. Estoy centrado en un da de Agosto, los Juegos Olmpicos.

El poderoso nadador Marko Albert de Estonia lider la carrera a la salida del agua y en la T1. Junto por detrs de l estaban el suizo Sebastien Gacond y Volodymyr Polikarpenko de Ucrania y medallista de plata el ao pasado. A 12 segundos de Albert estaba Matt Reed de los Estados Unidos y a otros 4 segundos el defensor del campeonato Hendrik DeVilliers de Sudfrica.
Rpidamente en los 40 kilmetros del circuito de la bicicleta los hombres se agruparon formando un gran grupo en cabeza de 37 corredores. Justo pasado el punto medio del circuito de la bicicleta, el americano Brian Fleischmann atac y se puso en cabeza con una ventaja de 24 segundos tras la quinta de las 8 vueltas. En la ltima parte de la bicicleta, Fleischmann fue atrapado por Reed y los dos americanos llegaron juntos a la T2 y encabezaron los 10 kilmetros del recorrido de carrera a pie.

Tena mucha confianza hoy y realmente ataqu en la bicicleta, dijo Reed. Fue un buen da para tener una gran carrera a pie despus de un segmento de bicicleta tan duro como ese

Tras la primera vuelta de la carrera a pie, Reed empez a distanciarse de Fleischmann pero un grupo de siete hombres mantuvo la distancia. Sus perseguidores entre los que estaban el campen del mundo del 2007 Daniel Unger, el brasileo Reinaldo Colucci y DeVilliers, que buscaba revalidar el triunfo del ao pasado. En el punto medio de la carrera a pie Reed continuaba en cabeza pero el grupo perseguidor recort seis segundos de la ventaja.

Reed lleg a la ltima vuelta con 8 segundos de ventaja pero en punto de giro fue atrapado por DeVilliers y Unger. En el ltimo kilmetro el sudafricano se puso en cabeza seguido de cerca por Reed y Unger. En la subida de la ltima ascensin Unger aument el ritmo e hizo un sprint alocado para llegar a la lnea de meta y conseguir su primer ttulo de la copa del mundo. Reed se mantuvo en segunda posicin, justo por delante de DeVilliers en un emocionante final.

Mi objetivo era mantenerme con ellos en la subida y luego tirar todo lo que pudiese hasta el final, aadi Unger. Este es el mejor momento de mi vida

Es impresionante tener el apoyo del pblico local, coment el medallista de bronce DeVilliers. Tuvimos una carrera en el municipio el jueves con 464 atletas, todos con nuevas bicicletas y nuevos cascos. Fue genial.

El canadiense Kyle Jones termin cuarto y Laurent Vidal de Francia quinto, el mejor resultado de su carrera para ambos.

Tras llegar a Richards Bay sin clasificacin (debido a no haber corrido) Unger salta al nmero diez mundial, empatado con Simon Whitfield. De Villiers salta del 44 al 14, empatado con Reed que tambin llegaba a la carrera sin clasificacin.
