World Championships Spotlight: GBR

At last years world championships in Lausanne, Great Britain did something that no other mens team had ever done before.  It swept all three mens world championships titles with Alistair Brownlee winning the juniors, Will Clarke taking the under23 title and Tim Don running off with the elite world championship.  With a trio of defending world champions and coming off the only UK world cup in Salford, the spotlight shines on the British team as it continues its preparations for the 2007 Hamburg BG Triathlon World Championships beginning on August 30.

The last time British men dominated this event was in 1998 when the great Simon Lessing won his record fourth world championship and Don was crowned junior world champion, ironically in Lausanne as well.  He also became just the second man to win both the junior and elite world titles.  The only other man to accomplish that feat was fellow Brit Spencer Smith.

Although Don easily concedes his triumph is Lausanne last year will go down as one of his careers most memorable moments, he maintains that it hasnt diminished his motivation or drive to defend his title in Hamburg.

If youve been world champion once, it doesnt mean you dont want to be it again, said Don.  Ill be looking to be in tip top shape for Hamburg.

After kicking off his world cup season with a sixth place finish in Madrid, Don placed fourth in Des Moines and Salford, where both events featured deep fields.

Clarke, the current Under23 world champion, wont be defending his title as he will move up and compete in the elite division in Hamburg.  After a slow start to his 2007 campaign that included a bike crash in Madrid, Clarke has started to find his form with back to back top ten finishes in Kitzbuhel and Salford.

Meanwhile Brownlee has been tearing up the junior circuit since winning his first world title in Lausanne.  The precocious teenager has added the European championship, the European duathlon title, and a silver at the world duathlon championships.  This past weekend he made his elite world cup debut and impressed many with a solid 20th place finish.  Still eligible as junior Brownlee will likely defend his title in Hamburg and could be just the second junior to repeat as world champion.

The only other country to dominate the world championships in same fashion that Great Britain did last year was the Australian womens team that collected all the titles in 2003.  While the powerful Australian team holds most of the sports records, the Brits can still lay claim to more elite mens world titles than the Aussies with seven in total.

The British women havent enjoyed quite the success as their male counterparts, nor do they have quite the same tradition of champions but will still enter Hamburg with a number of contenders.  Michelle Dillon will be the most serious threat after making the podium in Lisbon and Madrid this year.  The former European champion was a bronze medalist in 2002 but knows with the deep field of strong women, she will have to be at her best to make the Hamburg podium.

I think I just have to be in the form of my life.  I think I have to have a little bit of luck, being in the right place at the right time in the swim, said Dillon.  Maybe having the best swim Ive had this year and being hopefully in the second pack somewhere and able to bridge up to the first pack.  Feeling good the whole day and hoping it all comes together.

The British team already have a few world championships so far this year, with Paul Amey taking the Duathlon title in Gyor, Hungary and Leanda Cave winning the Long Distance triathlon world championship in Lorient, France.

With another talent-rich team traveling to Hamburg and feeding off the support of the enthusiastic fans, Great Britain could be adding to its tally of world championship titles.
