Qualification Criteria

National Federation Qualification Criteria for Tokyo 2020

AUSTRALIA

  • Top 3 in the Tokyo 2019 Test Event gets automatic selection
  • If no one does, the first Australian athlete in the Top 8 gets automatic selection

AUSTRIA

  • Best finishing athlete in the 2019 Tokyo test Event will get an automatic spot in the team
  • Best finishing athlete in the 2019 ITU Lausanne Grand Final will get the second spot

BELGIUM

  • In the two years of the Qualifying Period, athlete needs to finish Top 3 in the European Championships or Top 5 in a WTS
  • If more athletes meet the criteria than the available spots that Belgium has, next criteria will be based in individual results of the athlete

FRANCE

  • Any athlete who finishes in the Top 3 of the World Series in 2019, or Top 3 in the Olympic Qualification Ranking
  • We can also qualify Mixed Relay member that competed in winning team of Hamburg 2019 World Championships. Any athlete with the fastest split of that race also gets automatic selection

GERMANY

  • First spot of the country will be for anyone finishing Top 12 in the Tokyo 2019 Test Event
  • Next spot will be for an athlete in the Top 20 of the Ranking at the end of the 2019 WTS season, but only counting three athletes per nation
  • A Relay Test will select spots that haven’t been taken yet

GREAT BRITAIN

  • For returning Olympic medallists, a podium at the 2019 Tokyo Test Event means automatic selection for Tokyo 2020
  • For non-Olympic medallists, they had to be at the podium in WTS Yokohama 2019 and the Test Event
  • If no one meets this criteria, GB will look at their individual performances in the Test Event and early WTS races in 2020

HUNGARY

  • First ranked athlete in the Qualification List, followed by the second man.
  • Same criteria for the Women
  • If the Team qualifies in the China event, athletes will be selected in the last moment

ITALY

  • First option: finishing in Top 8 in both WTS Yokohama 2019 and the Test Event
  • Second option: if an athlete is, at the end of 2019, believed to be capable of a Top 8 finish in the Olympics, and then can be nominated for early selection
  • Third option in 2020: athletes that can potentially finish in Top 8 at the WTS Yokohama 2020
  • If no athletes are selected based on their individual performance, Italy will look at their performance in the Mixed Relay to make the team

JAPAN

  • Athletes will be selected based on their performance at WTS Hamburg 2019, Tokyo 2019 Test Event and WTS Abu Dhabi 2020

MEXICO

  • Athletes will be nominated for the Tokyo 2020 team based in their performances in the Test Event and WTS races

NETHERLANDS

  • If an athlete gets a Top 6 in an Olympic distance WTS race within the Qualification period, he or she will get automatic selection

NEW ZEALAND

  • Selection process takes into account individual performances and Relay commitment
  • A podium in the 2019 Tokyo test event gives an athlete an automatic spot in the team

PORTUGAL

  • Athlete must be in the Top 20 of the Olympic Qualification ranking and needs a podium in the last year of the Olympic Qualification period
  • If no one meets the requirements, decision will be taken by Head Coaches based in performance during the last year

SPAIN

  • First spot will be for anyone finishing Top 3 in the 2019 Lausanne Grand Final, or Top 8 in the Olympic Qualification Ranking at the end of 2019
  • Second spot, for the second athlete in the Ranking among the Top 15 at the end of 2019
  • Third spot, at coaches’ discretion
  • For the Women, first spot will be for anyone finishing Top 10 in the 2019 Tokyo Test Event or a Top 15 in the Ranking at the end of 2019
  • Second spot for a Top 30 in the Ranking at the end of 2019

USA

  • The first procedure for automatic selection is in the 2019 Tokyo test event. If two athletes get in the podium, the two of them get automatic selection
  • If we have one athlete in the podium in the Test event and another athlete in the top 8, both get automatic selection
  • If we have no athletes in the podium at the Test Event, an athlete in the Top 8 gets automatic selection
  • The second procedure is in WTS Yokohama 2020. If there are still positions available, we can select one athlete who gets in the podium
  • If no athletes get selected in the Tokyo Test Event, we can select two athletes in WTS Yokohama 2020 if they are in the podium
  • If no athlete podiums either in Tokyo Test Event or WTS Yokohama 2020, we can select an athlete in the Top 8 in this last race
