African Championships Review

South Africa dominated the 2008 ATU African Triathlon Championships in Tunisia and assured the country at least one representative in the men’s and women’s triathlon competitions at this summer’s Beijing Olympic Games. Mari Rabie and Hendrik DeVilliers, who were both crowned South African National champions last month, showed their strong form again by taking gold at the African continental championships.

The women’s race was an expected battle between Rabie and two-time defending champion Kate Roberts, also of South Africa, and the two women set the pace early. Rabie exited the water first, with Roberts just eight seconds behind. But out onto the bike course, the stronger cyclist Rabie pulled away, putting distance between her and Roberts. She didn’t let up on the run, posting the fastest run split of the day and cruised to the African Championships victory by three full minutes. Roberts held on for silver while Corinne Berg took the bronze as the third African athlete across the line, making it a complete South African sweep of the podium.

“It was cold and windy as I like it because it’s tough. I’ve been sick for two weeks so I wasn’t sure how it would go,” said Rabie. “My swim was a bit off from where it used to be but the plan was just to go head down from the start. Then on the bike I felt really good, I think I got off two minutes off the chasing pack which was four or five girls. Then on the run I was just working hard to keep that gap and make it bigger and bigger so I felt really good.”

It was another decisive victory for the in-form Rabie who will head into the BG Triathlon World Cup season opener in just three weeks riding a wave of momentum.

The victory assures South Africa at least one Olympic spot but it does not guarantee that spot will go to Rabie. Selection to South Africa’s Olympic team is discretionary. In ITU’s current Olympic rankings, both Rabie and Roberts are ranked high enough to earn South Africa two Olympic spots for the women. In the event both should drop from the Olympics rankings, South Africa would still retain at least one Olympic spot by virtue of Rabie’s win today.

In the men’s field, all eyes were on defending champion Hendrik DeVilliers. He emerged from the water first but did not own much of a lead with Kent Horner and Italian Emilio D’Aquino right behind him. On the 40-kilometer bike course, Frenchman Toumy Degham rode back into contention with the fastest bike split of the day. It came down to a dual on the run course between DeVilliers and his compatriot Erhard Wolfaardt. Despite hammering out the fastest run among the men, Wolfaardt didn’t have enough to overtake DeVilliers who broke the tape for his second straight African title. Wolfaardt took the silver just ten seconds behind while Degham came across third. However, as a non-African athlete, Degham was not eligible for a spot on the podium. Horner was the bronze medalist as the third African athlete across the line.

“It was a cold race but luckily it warmed up a little bit before the elite race in the afternoon so it wasn’t too bad,” said DeVilliers. “I’m just happy with how the race went. I had a really good swim, felt strong on the bike, got a little bit of a break there and felt good on the run. My run’s not really up to scratch but I’m really happy with the way my season has started having done three solid races and I’m looking forward to the next world cup races.”

South Africa also dominated the elite team relays taking gold-bronze in the men’s relay and gold-silver in the women’s relay.

France won both the men’s and women’s under23 races but as non-African athletes, they were not eligible to be crowned African champions.

Wikus Weber of South African took the junior men’s title more than a full minute over compatriot Richard Murray. Loy de Jager took the bronze for a full South African sweep of the podium.

Zimbabwe’s Ashley Finaughty won the junior women’s race to capture her country’s only gold medal of the 2008 African Championships. It was a convincing with for Finaughty who was runner-up in this category last year. South Africans Vicky Van Der Merwe and Carlyn Fischer took silver and bronze respectively.

The 2008 ATU African Triathlon Championships marks the first ITU-sanctioned race ever staged in Tunisia. The country is the newest addition to the ITU family after becoming affiliated in 2007, the tenth African National Federation with ITU. The elite contests highlight a busy week at the ATU Triathlon African Championships. Earlier in the week ITU held various courses including level 1 officials and coaches clinics as part of its ongoing support to develop triathlon in Africa.

Sudáfrica dominó hoy los Campeonatos de África de Triatlón ATU en Túnez y garantiza la presencia de al menos un representante tanto masculino como femenino en las competiciones de triatlón en los juegos Olímpicos de Beijing este verano. Mari Rabie y Hendrik DeVilliers quienes se coronaron como campeones Nacionales Sudafricanos el pasado mes, mostraron su gran estado de forma para hacerse con la medalla de oro en los Campeonatos Africanos Nacionales.

La carrera femenina fue una esperada lucha entre Rabie y las dos veces defensora del campeonato Kate Roberts, también de Sudáfrica, y las dos mujeres pusieron rápidamente el ritmo. Rabie salió primera del agua, con Roberts a tan sólo ocho segundos. Pero al inicio del recorrido de la bicicleta, Rabie, la ciclista más fuerte se distanció, poniendo distancia entre ella y Roberts. Ella no aflojó en la carrera consiguiendo el segmento de carrera a pie más rápido del día y se alzó con la victoria en el Campeonato Africano con tres minutos de ventaja. Roberts se hizo con la plata mientras que Corinne Berg se llevó el bronce siendo la tercera atleta africana en cruzar la línea de meta, siendo un completo barrido Sudafricano en el podium.

“Fue un día frío y ventoso como a mi me gusta porque lo hace más duro. He estado enferma durante dos semanas y no estaba segura de como iría,” dijo Rabie. “Mi natación estuvo lejos de donde debía estar, pero el plan fue darlo todo desde la salida. Luego en la bicicleta me sentí realmente bien, lo que me hizo poner dos minutos sobre el grupo perseguidor que era de cuatro o cinco chicas. Luego en la carrera a pie yo trabajé duro para mantener la ventaja y hacerla más y más grande cada vuelta por lo que me sentí realmente bien.”

Fue otra victoria decisiva para Rabie quien está en un gran momento de forma y será una de las favoritas en el inicio de temporada en la Copa del Mundo de Triatlón BG en tan sólo tres semanas.

La victoria asegura al menos un puesto para Sudáfrica en las Olimpiadas pero esto no garantiza que la plaza vaya para Rabie. La selección para el Equipo Olímpico Sudáfricano es discrecional. En la actual clasificación Olímpica de la ITU, tanto Rabie como Roberts están clasificadas lo suficientemente altas para ganar para Sudáfrica dos plazas Olímpicas femeninas. En el caso de que ambas descendiesen en su clasificación Olímpica, Sudáfrica todavía mantendría al menos una plaza Olímpica gracias al triunfo hoy de Rabie.

En la categoría masculina todos los ojos estaban puestos sobre el defensor del campeonato Hendrik DeVilliers. Él salió del agua en primera posición pero con poca diferencia sobre Kent Horner y el italiano Emilio D’Aquino que estaban justo detrás. Sobre los 40 kilómetros de bicicleta, el francés Toumy Degham se metió en la disputa con el segmento de bicicleta más rápido del día. Pero en la carrera a pie no aguanto el ritmo y la lucha se quedó entre DeVilliers y su compatriota Erhard Wolfaardt. A pesar de realizar la carrera a pie más rápida no fue suficiente para alcanzar a DeVilliers quien cruzó la cinta para alcanzar así su segundo título africano consecutivo. Wolfaardt se hizo con la plata mientras que Degham llegó tercero. Sin embargo, como un atleta no africano, Degham, no podía conseguir plaza en el podium, la medalla de bronce fue para Horner, tercer africano en cruzar la línea de meta.

“Fue una carrera fría pero por suerte la temperatura subió un poco por la tarde antes de la carrera por lo que no fue tan malo,” dijo DeVilliers. “Estoy tan feliz de cómo ha ido la carrera. Tuve una natación realmente buena, me sentí fuerte sobre la bicicleta y conseguí una pequeña ventaja aquí y luego me sentí bien en la carrera a pie. Estoy muy feliz de la manera que ha comenzado mi temporada habiendo hecho tres buenas carreras y espero impacientemente la próxima carrera de la copa del mundo.”

La atleta de Zimbabwe Ashley Finaughty ganó la carrera junior femenina dando a su país la única medalla de oro de los Campeonatos Africanos 2008. Fue una convincente victoria para Finaughty quien fue subcampeona en esta categoría el año pasado. Las sudafricanas Vicky Van Der Merwe y Carlyn Fischer se hicieron con la plata y el bronce respectivamente.

Los Campeonatos Africanos de Triatlón ATU 2008 son la primera vez la ITU los organiza en Túnez. Es el país que se ha unido más recientemente a la familia de la ITU al afiliarse en el 2007, convirtiéndose en la décima Federación Nacional Africana en estar con la ITU. La prueba elite destacó en una semana completa de los Campeonatos Africanos de Triatlón ATU. A comienzos de semana la ITU albergó varios cursos, incluido el nivel 1 de oficiales y entrenadores como parte de su apoyo para el desarrollo del triatlón en África.
